Cutting fluid

What is the function of cutting fluid during drilling?

Cutting fluid comes in different types such as. Straight oils, Emulsion, Synthetic cutting fluids and Other specialty cutting fluids. The most common type of cutting fluid used is emulsion.

  • Emulsion  is a mixture of oil and water. The mixing ratio should be between 8 – 12% when drilling Hardox. For other types of materials, consult your cutting fluid dealer.
  • Having a correct coolant supply is crucial to achieve successful performance in drilling. The coolant supply influences chip evacuation, hole quality and tool life.
  • Internal coolant is always preferred to avoid chip jamming, especially in long chipping materials such as Hardox®, A high pressure on the emulsion is needed when drilling deeper holes.
  • A warning! If drilling magnesium alloys, never cool with water-based cutting fluids due to the risk of chips catching fire.
