What type of drill should I use?

There is a large selection of drills to choose from. How to choose the correct drill to use depends on a number of different conditions.

  • Workpiece material, hardness, chemical composition and heat treatment.
  • Machine selection
  • The stability of the machine
  • Tool holder selection
  • Hole quality
  • Drilling depth

Which drill should I choose when drilling in Hardox®?

Drills that work well to use in Hardox® are as follows:

Solid Cemented Carbide Drill

It should be the first choice when drilling small diameters and when closer diameter is require. Works well for short or relatively deep holes. The drill is sensitive to vibrations and should be used together with high precision chucks.

Drill With Exchangeable Head

A good first choice when drilling medium-sized holes. The exchangeable head provides an economical solution. Remember to use as short a drill body as possible when drilling in Hardox®.

Indexable Insert Drill

This drill produces holes at low cost, due to the fact that it is possible to use several sides on the inserts. This type of drill has no tip that centres the drill, therefore use as short drill body as possible for maximum radial stability when perform drilling in Hardox®.
