SSAB is the largest producer and supplier of carbon plate in North America, with a market share of approximately 30% in 2025. SSAB maintains a strong market position in the energy and heavy transport market segments. The US accounts for about 85% of sales, Canada 10% and Latin America 5%.

SSAB Americas has responsibility for sales of heavy plate in North America and for the scrap-based steel and plate production in Montpelier, USA. SSAB Americas focuses on a high level of customer service and quality, as well as maintaining the lowest production cost. Over the past 5 years, SSAB Americas has obtained the highest customer score in the industry with regard to quality, service and overall satisfaction.1)

SSAB Americas’ operation, based on electric arc furnace (EAF) is highly productive and low-cost, with a continuous improvement program in place. Recently, more advanced digitalization has further improved EAF productivity, which has resulted in on-time cost savings for power, as one example. With the production of SSAB ZeroTM since 2023, SSAB Americas enables SSAB’s offering within decarbonized steel.

The strategy also aims to increase the growth of premium products for the energy and infrastructure segments as well as for heavy transport, which includes railroad cars and shipbuilding.

SSAB Americas produces heavy plate and coils. SSAB Americas’ steel is 100% recyclable and is made from 99% recycled materials. The durability and high strength of plate and coil produced by SSAB Americas means it lasts a long time, adding years to the lifecycle of products made using SSAB Americas’ steel and reducing customers’ carbon footprint. This long-lasting steel is used for applications such as transportation, where end users can enjoy reduced fuel consumption, and in the energy sector, contributing to the transition to, more renewable energy resources like wind power.

In 2023, SSAB’s Iowa facility became the first in the world to produce SSAB ZeroTM, made from recycled steel. It has near zero CO2 emissions during steel production, without mass balancing allocation of CO2 emission reductions or carbon emission offsetting.
