How to clamp a workpiece?

The workpieces usually have different shapes and weights. It is therefore very important to adapt the clamping to the shape of the workpiece. A workpiece that is poorly attached can create vibrations, deteriorate the surfaces in the hole and shorten the lifetime of the drill. In the worst case, the workpiece can detach and damage the machine and operator.

Is the material long chipping or short chipping?

Is it long chipping like Hardox® or is it Short chipping like cast iron?

If you experience problems with chip breaking, you can try increase the feed or reduce the cutting speed to get a thicker chip, which then breaks more easily.

You can also use a method called peek drilling. This means that the feed is interrupted at regular intervals to break the ongoing chip. You should be aware that if you use this method, the drill will wear out faster, especially when drilling in hardened steel like Hardox®.
