Large diameter piles with high load-bearing

Large diameter RR and RD piles are based on spirally welded high quality steel pipes. The pile range covers sizes 400 to 1200 mm. Large diameter RR and RD piles can also be made in customer specific diameters and wall thicknesses.

RR® and RD® piles design and installation manual

RR® pile

Driven RR large diameter piles (RR400–RR1200) are steel pipe piles consisting of a spirally welded steel pipe and an optional pile tip.

The key benefits include high load-bearing capacity, great stiffness and bending strength due to their shape, and high installation strength due to the steel's strength.

RD® pile

Drilled RD large diameter piles (RD400–RD1200) are special piles installed by drilling in difficult ground and environmental conditions.

Piles consist of a longitudinally or spirally welded steel pipe. They may be drilled through all natural soil layers all the way into bedrock, with small deviations in position and inclination.

Coatings

For structures in severe conditions, it may be beneficial to protect entire piles or parts with external coatings.

Order & delivery

Contact our sales to order steel piles from SSAB's stock or straight from the mill.

SSAB applies the General Conditions, ALBIF 2000, for deliveries with the addition that the parties will comply with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements and refrain from participating in any corrupt business practices.

The technical terms of delivery for steel piles manufactured by SSAB are in accordance with the EN 10219-1 and ETA-12/0526. The dimensions and tolerances are as defined in EN 10219-2. Engineering work, as applicable, is in accordance with standard EN 1090-2.

Steel piles are delivered with bundle tags and SSAB's pile markings to enable full traceability and identification.

Type 3.1 material certificate will be provided according to the standard EN 10204.

Cost savings through optimizing pile sizes and dimensions

There are great possibilities to reduce costs with right decisions at the project design phase, when large part of the total project costs are determined.

Our flexible manufacturing process of large diameter piles enables use of project specific dimensions. Cost savings can be found through project specific material thickness as well as steel grade used in piles.

Piles manufactured to the length specified by customer help to minimize splice welding on site and bring considerable savings in construction costs and time. Up to 39 m long large diameter RR and RD piles without splice welds can be manufactured to order. The longest RR piles with welded splices delivered by SSAB have been 45 m long.

Design tools

Software for fast and easy design

PileCalc is a design program for SSAB's steel piles. Eurocodes as well as National codes and instructions are applied in the end-bearing pile design.

PileWallCalc design tool enables easy calculation of cross section properties and bending resistances of the pile walls. The program calculates the bending resistances and normal force resistances of RD® pile wall, Combi wall and Zig-Zag Combi wall.

Environmental responsibility and sustainability

SSAB develops new products and services in order to improve our customers’ performance in sustainability and overall efficiency.

Life cycle assessment data for SSAB’s products are available in the form of Environmental product declarations (EPDs). Manufacturing chain from raw material to finished product is carefully managed.

SSAB has introduced CE marking for infrastructure products. Declarations of Performance (DoP) indicate the technical characteristics of CE-marked products.

Customer cases

Metsä Fibre Kemi Bio product plant

SSAB steel piles to Finland’s largest piling site

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, is building a new bioproduct mill in Kemi next to existing pulp mill. The new mill will consume 7.6 million m3 of wood in a year and produce 1.5 million tons of pulp of which 70 % will be exported. Metsä Fibre’s investment to Kemi bioproduct mill is worth 1.85 billion euros and it will increase Finland’s export revenue with 0.5 billion euros annually. SSAB supplied displacement piles and micropiles for this new bioproduct mill, which Metsä Fibre is currently building in Kemi, Finland.

SSAB Large diameter piles in deep and steep Norwegian fjords

Green shipping has long been a goal for Norwegian transportation. This has led to heavy investments in electric and hybrid transportation ferries. These ferries are used to allow road traffic to pass over the huge number of fjords along the Norwegian coast line. In 2021, 70 ferries out of a total 200, more than 1/3, had been replaced by electric ones. This transition has been backed by national funding and has also triggered demand for infrastructure development.
