SSAB and Hexicon in agreement to develop floating platforms for wind power

May 12, 2014 9:00 CEST
SSAB is entering into an agreement with Hexicon AB to develop far off shore platforms. The combined technology will offer advantages within the market for renewable energy. A first demonstration unit is planned for Swedish waters in 2017.

Hexicon will together with SSAB optimize the steel material in the foundation of the wind platforms to ensure functionality and cost effective solutions during their complete life cycle.

“This agreement is an important milestone in further development of our patented solutions. Far offshore wind power is more easily scalable and a prime source of renewable energy. Hexicons technology offers competitive advantages for the long term renewable energy market”, says Henrik Baltscheffsky, CEO of Hexicon.

The floating foundations with several wind turbines enables efficient wind park configuration in locations where winds are stronger and environmental impact is reduced.

“The Hexicon patent is an application where our high strength structured steel WELDOX will come to excellent usage. We look forward to contribute to further development of the technology, which enables much needed renewable energy to be produced with lowest possible environmental impact”, says Melker Jernberg, Head of SSAB EMEA.
