RR® and RD® large diameter piles

Large diameter piles with high load-bearing

Large diameter RR and RD piles are based on spirally welded high quality steel pipes. The pile range covers sizes 400 to 1200 mm. Large diameter RR and RD piles can also be made in customer specific diameters and wall thicknesses.

RR® pile

Driven RR large diameter piles (RR400–RR1200) are steel pipe piles consisting of a spirally welded steel pipe and an optional pile tip.

The key benefits include high load-bearing capacity, great stiffness and bending strength due to their shape, and high installation strength due to the steel's strength.

Accessories:

In the Nordic countries, end-bearing RR large diameter piles are usually equipped with RR rock shoes.

Rock shoes

  • Shield the bottom end of the pile against loads created during the installation
  • Distribute the loads directed to the pile end as evenly as possible over the cross-section of the pile pipe
  • Prevent lateral sliding of the pile end

 

There are three types of rock shoes. The most common shoe type is equipped with a structural-steel dowel or a hardened-steel dowel. In the rock shoe with the hollow dowel filled with concrete, a tension bar can be injected into the rock by drilling through the rock shoe.

The pile end can also be shielded with bottom plates of a variety of types in conditions where a rock shoe is not required.

If the pile is to be installed as an open-bottom-end pile, a reinforcement ring can be installed on the bottom end of the pile already in the factory to shield the pile during installation.

RD® pile

Drilled RD large diameter piles (RD400–RD1200) are special piles installed by drilling in difficult ground and environmental conditions.

Piles consist of a longitudinally or spirally welded steel pipe. They may be drilled through all natural soil layers all the way into bedrock, with small deviations in position and inclination.

Splicing by welding

When piles are to be spliced by welding, they are delivered with the ends beveled for welding as ordered generally at an angle of 30 degrees. A groove may be machined in the welding bevel to serve as a backing for mechanized welding.

Coatings

For structures in severe conditions, it may be beneficial to protect entire piles or parts with external coatings.

SSAB can deliver pile pipes with several protective coating methods.

Coatings

Paint coating

For harbor structures or for otherwise severe conditions, it may be beneficial to protect entire piles or parts of them with external coatings. SSAB delivers anti corrosion coated steel pipes with protective painting or triple HDPE coating. The protective painting will be performed with protective paint combinations in accordance with EN ISO 12944­5.
Preliminary treatment, implementation and control of the painting, and testing of the coating are performed as described in EN ISO 12944. Also, interlocking sections and steel sheet piles can be corrosion protected with protective coating.

Triple ­layer coating

The implementation and quality assurance of the triple ­layer coating are performed according to the standard DIN 30 670. In this solution, an epoxy film protects the pile from corrosion while a polyethylene film shields the epoxy film against damage. The triple layer coating can be applied to 10–18.1­ meter ­long pipes. Longer pipes are splice welded, and the joint is protected with joint coating.

Cost savings through optimizing pile sizes and dimensions

There are great possibilities to reduce costs with right decisions at the project design phase, when large part of the total project costs are determined.

Our flexible manufacturing process of large diameter piles enables use of project specific dimensions. Cost savings can be found through project specific material thickness as well as steel grade used in piles.

Piles manufactured to the length specified by customer help to minimize splice welding on site and bring considerable savings in construction costs and time. Up to 39 m long large diameter RR and RD piles without splice welds can be manufactured to order. The longest RR piles with welded splices delivered by SSAB have been 45 m long.
