RD® pile wall as support structure for excavation of polluted ground

Case details
When the decision was taken to remove 8,600 m3 of soil partly containing polluted material, the solution was SSAB’s RD pile wall. This watertight support structure with high horizontal capacity and ability to penetrate the ground and other unknown obstacles (like big boulders, former concrete structures and man-made fillings) really fulfilled its purpose.
The project area bordered on Florvåg harbour, and was surrounded by existing buildings that had to be preserved during and after excavation. This meant two challenges; 1) Potential leakage of polluted water to the sea and leakage of seawater into the excavation pit. 2) Need for a very close excavation to existing buildings to remove all polluted soil. Limit of leakage was 4m3/hour. The pile wall was installed 1 m from the building partly due to the roof overhang.
