SSAB Europe participates in a VTT project to improve competitiveness in the European steel industry
SSAB Europe is one of the companies involved in the Morse project headed by VTT Technical Research Institute of Finland to improve processes in the European steel industry. The main focus is on developing new software tools which can be used to improve, manage and speed up production processes. This will improve products, business, competitiveness and cost and raw material efficiency in the industry. The EUR 5.7 million project will last four years and is being funded mainly by the European Union together with the other companies involved.

Companies in the Morse (Model-based optimisation for efficient use of resources and energy) project will work together to develop more accurate tools to improve steel quality and control complex processes.

SSAB’s objective in the project is to develop a tool to simulate material and energy flows to assess the impact of different raw material choices and process running options on production costs and efficiency. Simulation will allow the study of, for example, recycling options for secondary raw materials and the impact of these on total mill economy and steel quality. Online modeling of part processes in steelmaking and hot rolling will improve quality control in the process chain and the material efficiency of special products by developing tools to forecast quality control. The project aims to improve the yield of special products and to cut energy consumption by 2%, which corresponds to an annual reduction of 110 thousand tonnes in CO2emissions.

The entire project is headed by VTT. Other companies involved besides VTT are SSAB Europe Oy, Outokumpu Stainless, SW-Development Oy from Finland, VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH and GRIPS Industrial IT Solutions GmbH from Germany, Cybernetica from Norway, Maschinenfabrik Liezen und Giesserei Ges.m.b.H. from Austria and Optimizacion Orientada a la Sostenibilidad sl from Spain.
