Ruukki Construction expands climate targets to full value chain – aiming for net-zero by 2045

After significantly reducing emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 and 2), Ruukki is now committing to bold, new climate targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi):
• Scope 1 & 2: -85% by 2035
• Scope 3: -40% by 2035
• All Scopes (Net-Zero): -90% by 2045
All targets are based on absolute greenhouse gas emissions (tCO₂e), using 2019 as the base year. Emission calculations follow the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
“Sustainability has long been part of our strategy, and these new targets mark a major step forward. We want to help drive the entire industry toward a low-carbon future — not just by improving our own operations, but by looking at the full picture,” says Sami Eronen, CEO of Ruukki Construction.
From own operations to full value chain
Previously, Ruukki set a target to reduce operational emissions by 70% by 2030—and reached it six years early. By 2024, emissions from Ruukki’s own operations were already 76% lower than in 2019.
“We’ve already cut the majority of emissions from our own operations. But reaching our Scope 3 target will require even closer cooperation with our raw material suppliers — especially in steel — which account for over 80% of our total value chain emissions,” Eronen adds.
Ruukki’s new Scope 3 target covers the most significant upstream and downstream sources of emissions:
• Purchased goods and services (steel and insulation)
• Transportation (inbound and outbound)
• Waste from operations
• Leased facilities
Ruukki will publish more details on its roadmap and key actions in the near future.
