Updated manual on Combined walls
Quick design tables for Combined wall structures
The manual contains ready calculated resistance tables for different types of combined walls. Combined walls are retaining structures composed of primary tubular steel piles and secondary sheet piles, which together form a continuous and load-bearing wall system. Combined walls are mainly used in harbor structures like quay walls.
The main updates in the manual are:
- 1.2 partial factor for piles which have certain relative slenderness
- piles with 23 mm wall thickness have been removed from the tables
- adding of S460MH material.
The reason for 1.2 partial factor is the strong recommendation from CEN/TC250 (given in November 22nd 2024) for situations where the value of relative slenderness λx is between λx0 and λxp. Background for the recommendation are some calculations showing uncertainty on the safety of the resistance levels.
The manual contains tables for combined wall having:
- two intermediate U type sheet piles, width of single sheet pile 600 mm
- three intermediate U type sheet piles, width of single sheet pile 600 mm
- two intermediate Z type sheet piles, width of single sheet pile 700 mm
- two intermediate Z type sheet piles, width of single sheet pile 770 mm
- two intermediate Z type sheet piles, width of single sheet pile 800 mm.
The table values have been calculated according to guidelines given in EN 1993-5, where the primary elements act as retaining elements against the earth and water pressures and may act as bearing piles for vertical loads. And the secondary elements only fill the gap between the primary elements and transmit the loads resulting from earth and water pressures to the primary elements.
