A fatal accident occurred at SSAB’s steel mill in Luleå, Sweden late yesterday evening when a forklift truck collided with a train transporting crude iron from the blast furnace. Unfortunately, the driver of the forklift truck was killed in the accident.

-       “We are shocked by this very tragic accident. The forklift truck driver worked for a contractor carrying out blast furnace maintenance work at the site. The accident is completely unacceptable and our immediate thoughts are with the deceased’s family at this time. We are taking the incident very seriously,” says Nils Edberg, production and site manager at SSAB in Luleå.

SSAB is now working with the police and the contractor to establish how the accident occurred. A joint press conference with the police will be held at SSAB’s site in Luleå at 12 noon today.
