Sustainability targets

Our vision is at the core of our entire operation. In everything we do, we strive to create a stronger, lighter and more sustainable world. Sustainability is a key business driver for both us and our customers. Therefore, we put much effort into ensuring that we act in an ethical and environmentally sound way in all our operations and markets.

Sustainability strategy and targets

SSAB’s sustainability strategy is divided into three areas: Sustainable Offering, Sustainable Operations and Responsible Partner (Read more on p. 24). In 2017, SSAB increased the company’s ambitions for sustainability and set new objectives and targets.

Sustainable offering

Objectives & Targets

  • 10 Mtonne annual customer CO2 savings 2020*:
    • 8 Mtonnes of annual CO2 savings from SSAB EcoUpgraded deliveries by 2020
    • 2 Mtonnes of annual CO2 savings from Automotive Premium deliveries by 2020

Outcome in 2019

  • In 2019, the customer end-product CO2 savings totaled 9.9 Mtonnes:
    • 8.3 Mtonnes from SSAB EcoUpgraded deliveries
    • 1.6 Mtonne from Automotive Premium deliveries

Sustainable operations

Objectives & Targets

  • Fossil-free operations by 2045
  • In 2020:
    • Lasting reduction of 300,000 tonnes in CO2 emissions
    • Lasting reduction of 400 GWh in purchased energy
    • Lasting improvement of 50,000 tonnes in residuals utilization
    (Base year 2014)

Outcome in 2019

  • Construction of a pilot plant for fossil-free steel production ongoing in Luleå, Sweden.
  • By the end of 2019, SSAB achieved:
    • 296,000 tonnes or 99% of the CO2 emissions reduction target of 300,000 tonnes,
    • 463 GWh or 116% of the purchased energy reduction target of 400 GWh and
    • 51,000 tonnes or 102% of the residuals utilization target of 50,000 tonnes.

The environmental targets have been achieved a year ahead of plan and we are in the process of setting new targets internally for 2020 and externally post 2020.

Outcome in 2019

  • SSAB’s lost time injury frequency resulting in an absence of at least one day (LTIF) was 4.2 (6.1), which meant a clear improvement, as LTIF decreased 31% from 2018. The positive trend in safety performance is a result of systematic and consistent work across the organization.
  • Employee engagement score exceeding the global average
  • The Voice employee engagement survey conducted in 2019 gave results in line global benchmark levels both for all employees and for managers.
  • By the end of 2019: Women holding 30% of the top management positions
  • New target: By the end of 2025 women holding 35% of the top management positions
  • At the end of 2019, women held 27% (27%) of SSAB’s top management positions.

    Ensure supplier compliance with SSAB’s Supplier Sustainability Policy:

    • Share of total spend sustainability assessed at 93% in 2019 and 95% in 2020
    • Share of new suppliers sustainability assessed at 100% in 2019 and 2020
    • Site visits including social and environmental performance of suppliers: 20 in 2019 and 24 in 2020
    • Number of third party sustainability audits: 5 in 2019 and 3 in 2020

    In 2019:
