This makes SSAB the first in the world to produce fossil-free steel, steel made with iron produced using HYBRIT technology, i.e., reduced by 100% hydrogen instead of coal and coke. This trial delivery is an important step towards a completely fossil-free value chain. The goal is to deliver fossil-free steel to the market and demonstrate the technology on an industrial scale as early as 2026.

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall created the HYBRIT initiative (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology), in 2016, with the aim to develop a technology for fossil-free iron and steelmaking. In June 2021, the three companies were able to showcase the world’s first hydrogen-reduced sponge iron produced at HYBRIT’s pilot plant in Luleå. This first sponge iron has since been used to produce the first steel made with this breakthrough technology.

The program will begin with a seminar on fossil-free steelmaking, green industrial development and the market for fossil-free products. Participants will also be invited to visit the rolling mill and be present when the very first fossil-free steel is made ready for delivery.

Participants include Sweden’s Minister for Business, Industry and Innovation Ibrahim Baylan, Martin Lindqvist, President and CEO of SSAB, Jan Moström, President and CEO of LKAB, and Anna Borg, President and CEO of Vattenfall.
