Strenx® 700 takes performance above and beyond

Yield strength of 700 MPa (101 ksi) and above is the new normal when designing high-strength steel. If you are using a lower strength steel, your products are probably not living up to their potential.

Upgrading to a steel with higher yield strength leaves room for more high performing designs with increased load-bearing capacity. The stresses can be higher which allows for the use of thinner steel. This adds several advantages:

• Depending on the starting point, designers can cut up to 40% weight of steel structures – and still increase the fatigue life.

• If the parts are welded, welding time and the amount of welding consumables will be significantly reduced.

Typical upgrading benefits

Strenx® 700MC is commonly used in lightweight solutions for trailer chassis. Upgrading a trailer chassis from a 350-grade using Strenx® 700MC typically generates a weight reduction of about 30% for the chassis structural parts. Depending on the chassis design, the weight reduction potential may be even higher, up to 50%. Strenx® 700MC meets or exceeds the EN 10149-2 standard for S700MC steels.

CUSTOMER CASE

Innovative crane design for extreme durability

Crane design often involves a compromise between weight and durability. Strenx® 700MC Plus made it possible for Kesla to design a lighter crane without compromising its durability. The material has a high toughness at temperatures as low as -60°C (-76°F) – making the crane reliable and safe even in harsh locations like Siberia.

Welding

Strenx® 700 can be welded using any conventional welding method. MAG welding is the most common technique today, since it is very easy to automate for high productivity.

Machining

Strenx® 700 can usually be machined without special equipment. Stable machinery fitted with high-speed steel and carbide tools is recommended when drilling, countersinking, tapping, turning and milling.

Bending

Free bending and roll bending of Strenx® steel plate and strip can be done using standard bending machinery. Uniform properties, close thickness tolerances and high surface quality ensure a predictable bending process.

Mechanical cutting

Mechanical cutting of Strenx® 700 is best performed with guillotine shears. Consider carefully the settings of the cutting machine. The most important factors are clearance, cutting angle and blade hardness. The plate should be allowed to warm up thoroughly to around +20°C (68°F) before it is cut.

Strenx® guarantees

Strenx® guarantees include tight thickness tolerances, tight flatness tolerances and bending properties. The tight thickness tolerances enable you to know the weight more precisely. As a result, you can reduce your safety margins. Precise thickness within a plate and between plates makes for safe and predictable performance in the workshop.
