High strength, high protection with Strenx® weathering steel

Strenx® weathering steels are high-strength structural steel with yield strengths of 700 and 960 MPa. Using steel with such high yield strength levels leaves room for more high-performing designs with increased load-bearing capacity. It permits higher stresses in the structure, allowing the designer to reduce the thickness of the parts. Depending on the starting point, designers can cut up to 30 percent of the weight off steel structures.

The special alloy composition in Strenx® weathering steel makes it perform differently than ordinary carbon steel. When exposed to alternating wet and dry weather conditions, a protective oxide layer – a patina – is formed on the steel’s surface. This oxide layer prevents further corrosion, resulting in a steel which is practically maintenance-free.

The versatility of Strenx® weathering steel

Whenever you need structural performance and want to protect your equipment against corrosion, Strenx® weathering steel can be your preferred choice. Particularly in transport applications that operate in rough environments where the paint surface can be damaged. Apart from road and rail applications, Strenx® weathering is used for different types of cranes, agriculture equipment and other load-bearing steel structures that are exposed to the elements.

On the road

  • Trailer chassis
  • Containers
  • Timber trailers

On the track

  • Light rail wagons
  • Railroad wagons
  • Tram bodies

Other equipment

  • Road safety barriers
  • Offshore cranes
  • Agriculture equipment

Painted Strenx® weathering steel combines sustainability with appearance

When painting Strenx® weathering steel for aesthetic and protective reasons, it also scores high on sustainability. The surface of Strenx® weathering steel has properties that make it highly suitable for a long-lasting coat of paint. The steel’s surface improves paint adhesion – resulting in a more durable paint layer. The need for repainting can be reduced by 50% during the equipment’s lifespan.

And if the paint is damaged and the steel scratched, the exposed surface recreates a patina layer which effectively seals the steel and minimizes creepage of corrosion under the paint. All in all, this means longer intervals between painting, which in turn reduces the environmental impact from paint production and use. Not to mention the money saved by not having to repaint!

Basic carbon steel S420

The corrositivity class: C5
Time: 6 years
On regular carbon steel, damage to the paint allows the corrosion to
creep under the paint.

Strenx® 700 HR W

The corrositivity class: C5
Time: 6 years
Paint has strong adhesion on Strenx® weathering steels,
minimizing the spread of corrosion.

You can choose not to paint your application, the ultimate color of the steel’s patina layer depends on the climate and if air pollution is present. The process to reach the final appearance usually takes 2–6 years.

Safeguarding your equipment’s structural integrity

When designing with high-strength structural steel you take advantage of the steel’s high yield strength to make equipment that is both strong and light. You calculate the allowed stresses in the material based on the steel properties and loads. Knowing that Strenx® weathering steel will maintain it’s thickness adds another level of security and safety margins to structural applications.

Made for predictable performance in the workshop

Person welding Strenx® high-strength steel in the workshop.

Welding

Strenx® weathering can be welded using any conventional welding method. MAG welding is the most common technique today, since it is very easy to automate for high productivity.

Machining

Strenx® weathering can usually be machined without special equipment. Stable machinery fitted with high-speed steel and carbide tools is recommended when drilling, countersinking, tapping, turning and milling.

Bending

Free bending and roll bending of Strenx® steel plate and strip can be done using standard bending machinery. Uniform properties, close thickness tolerances and high surface quality ensure a predictable bending process.

Thermal cutting

Free bending and roll bending of Strenx® steel plate and strip can be done using standard bending machinery. Uniform properties, close thickness tolerances and high surface quality ensure a predictable bending process.

Mechanical cutting

Mechanical cutting of Strenx® weathering is best performed with guillotine shears. Consider carefully the settings of the cutting machine. The most important factors are clearance, cutting angle and blade hardness. The plate should be allowed to warm up thoroughly to around +20°C (68°F) before it is cut.

Strenx® guarantees

Strenx® guarantees include tight thickness tolerances, tight flatness tolerances and bending properties. The tight thickness tolerances enable you to know the weight more precisely. As a result, you can reduce your safety margins. Precise thickness within a plate and between plates makes for safe and predictable performance in the workshop.
