    Hardox® 500 Tuf for high productivity in mining

    Can your valuable mining equipment take a pounding every day and still reach high levels of productivity and profitability? Schlam knows that it can, with a boost in loading capacity of up to 20%. You too can protect your investments with Hardox® 500 Tuf in mining haul truck bodies. It has a guaranteed narrow Brinell hardness range of 475-505 HBW, an impact energy of 27 J at -20°C (20 ft-lb at -4°F) and a typical value of 45 J at -40°C (33 ft-lb at -40°F), making it the optimal choice in cold conditions.

    Hardox® 500 Tuf is a recycling champion

    Containers made of Hardox® 500 Tuf are light and strong and stand up to the harshest recycling challenges. The Finnish company Ferreus turned to Hardox® 500 Tuf and saved more than one tonne (1.1 tons) in container weight. Heavy and sharp materials like steel scrap, concrete rebar and demolition scrap are no match for Hardox® 500 Tuf. The recycling container is ready to handle the toughest of loads and still return in good shape at the end of the day.

    Hardox® 500 Tuf keeps concrete mixers rolling

    Using Hardox® 500 Tuf in concrete mixers makes them lighter and more durable. The German company Stetter knows this firsthand, since it was able to the cut weight of its mixer drums. The additional hardness Hardox® 500 Tuf gives, compared to Hardox® 400 and Hardox® 450, allows for thinner dimensions that reduce drum weight with the same high wear life. Alternatively, if you keep the same thickness the drum lasts longer. Either way, Hardox® 500 Tuf makes any concrete mixer drum more competitive.

    Longer service life for all kinds of abrasive materials

    With Hardox® WearCalc software from SSAB, you can calculate and determine the increase in service life of equipment made in Hardox® 500 Tuf compared with generic AR steel with lower hardness values. A calculation based on sliding wear with granite shows:

    • 30-50% longer service life than a 450 HBW material
    • 85-100% longer service life than a 400 HBW material, the hardness value of many generic AR steels with lower hardness values.

    Similar calculations can also be performed for other abrasive materials, such as coal, iron ore, limestone, sand, glass and household waste containing metal.

    Dimension Range

    Hardox® 500 Tuf is available as sheet in thicknesses of 3.0 - 6.5 mm, and as plate in thicknesses of 4.0 – 25.4 mm. More detailed information on dimensions is provided in the dimension program.

        1) Brinell hardness, HBW, according to EN ISO 6506-1, on a milled surface 0.5 – 3 mm below surface. At least one test specimen per heat and 40 tons. The nominal thickness of supplied plates will not deviate more than +/- 15 mm from the thickness of the test specimen used for hardness testing. For sheet the Brinell hardness test is according to EN ISO 6506-1 on each heat treatment individual/coil. Hardness is measured on a milled surface 0.3 - 2 mm below surface.

        Hardox® wear plate is through-hardened. Minimum core hardness is 90 % of the guaranteed minimum surface hardness.

                    Tolerances according to Hardox® Thickness Guarantee. Hardox® Guarantees meets the requirements of EN 10029 Class A for plate, but offers more narrow tolerances. For sheets the guarantees meets the requirements of 1/2 EN 10051.

                    Length and Width

                    According to SSAB’s dimension program. For plate, the tolerances are according to SSAB´s mill edge standard or tolerances that conform to EN 10029. For sheet the tolerances conform to EN 10051, tighter tolerances available on request.


                    Tolerances according to EN 10029 for plate and according to EN 10051 for sheet.


                    For plate the tolerances are according to Hardox® flatness guarantees Class D, which are more restrictive than EN 10029. For sheet the tolerances are according to Hardox® flatness guarantees Class A, that offer narrower tolerances compared to EN 10051.

                    Surface Properties

                    According to EN 10163-2 Class A, Subclass 1.

                    Delivery Conditions

                    The delivery condition is Q or QT (Quenched or Quenched and Tempered). The sheets are delivered with an as-rolled surface and mill edge as standard, and the plates are delivered with sheared or thermally cut edges.

                    Fabrication and Other Recommendations

                    Welding, bending and machining

                    Recommendations can be found in SSABs brochures at www.hardox.com or consult Tech Support.

                    Bendability for plates are according to Hardox® Bending Guarantees Class F. For sheets the bendability are according to Hardox bending guarantees Class B.

                    Hardox® wear plate is not intended for further heat treatment. It has obtained its mechanical properties by quenching and when necessary by means of subsequent tempering. The properties of the delivery condition cannot be retained after exposure to temperatures in excess of 250ºC .

                    Appropriate health and safety precautions must be taken when welding, cutting, grinding or otherwise working on this product. Grinding, especially of primer coated plates, may produce dust with a high particle concentration.
