Poland’s first building with SSAB Zero™ for a reduced carbon footprint

SSAB Zero, Building industry, GreenCoat, Construction, Ruukki Construction, Customer story
When a new logistics center was planned in Warsaw, the developers wanted to build using materials with low carbon emissions and excellent insulation properties. The solution was Ruukki® LowCarbon sandwich panels, made of GreenCoat® color coated SSAB Zero™ steel.

Just outside the Polish capital, a short distance from Chopin Airport, rises City Point Okęcie – a new logistics hub covering 11,000 square meters of warehouse and office space. This is Poland’s first building where the façade is made of sandwich panels using SSAB Zero™ steel.

When Ruukki, a subsidiary of SSAB, produces these low carbon panels at its Oborniki plant, the entire process runs on renewable energy. SSAB Zero™ is made from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity, resulting in a material with near-zero fossil carbon emissions*.

The outcome: panels with a 42% lower embedded carbon footprint compared to standard panels – verified in Ruukki’s Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).

“We are proud to contribute to change in the construction industry through our new low carbon products, developed with a strong focus on sustainability and the full lifecycle of buildings”
Waldemar Szostak, CEE Business Director at Ruukki

Color coated steel for modern logistics solutions

Peakside Capital, the developer behind City Point Okęcie, selected Ruukki® LowCarbon sandwich panels for the façade. The panels are lightweight, easy to install, energy efficient, and provide excellent insulation – ideal for modern logistics facilities.

The GreenCoat® color coated steel used in the panels also offers superior UV and scratch resistance, long-lasting color retention and comes with a technical guarantee of up to 50 years. The fact that it is now available in SSAB Zero™ steel was a decisive factor.

“Introducing innovative solutions is our responsibility for creating quality and longevity. Peakside's cooperation with Ruukki represents a conscious, long-term investment, both in terms of advancing the circular economy and addressing the challenges of climate change. The choice of low-carbon sandwich panels made entirely from recycled steel perfectly reflects our commitment to circular construction principles. In addition, the new colour standard reduces heat absorption, which not only improves the buildings’ energy efficiency but also extends their lifespan,” says Katarzyna Krześniak, ESG Project Manager at Peakside Capital.

City Point Okęcie is also equipped with heat pumps, a rooftop photovoltaic system, and a rainwater collection system for reuse. Water-saving installations reduce potable water consumption by up to 65%.

A step toward fossil-free construction

By combining low-emission steel, renewable energy, and smart building technology, the project demonstrates how the steel industry’s transformation can directly impact the construction sector’s carbon footprint.

“City Point Okęcie sets a new benchmark for sustainable industrial development. It shows how innovation and partnership can turn ESG principles into tangible results – reducing emissions, improving efficiency and delivering long-term value for both our tenants and the environment,” adds Katarzyna Krześniak.

* Fossil-based CO2 emissions from SSAB’s production of SSAB Zero™ are less than 0.05 kg CO2e/kg of steel (Scope 1 and 2, GHG Protocol).
