Our solution

Due to tight schedule of the project and demanding soil conditions, drilled RD piles were chosen for the project. Pile sizes RD800, RD600 and RD400 were used. RD800 piles are drilled three meters (4xD) and smaller ones 2 meters into the bedrock and grouted to the hole to ensure rigid connection. Piles are inclined and also tension anchors are used to take heavy accidental lateral and lifting loads.

In TYKS T3 project RD800 piles are exposed to de-icing salt and piles were protected against corrosion with 3-layer HDPE coating on piles. Additional to the coating, the resistance of the piles has been calculated with extra 2 mm corrosion allowance to wall thickness.

Customer case

Turku University Hospital (TYKS) is building a massive new building, named T3 Hospital, on top of existing E18 freeway and a rail road. New building will have total area of 54 000 m2 in eight stories. Total budget for the project is 158 M€.

Due to cold winters in Finland, a de-icing salt is often used for roads. This causes severe corrosion environment for steel piles.

“We prepared for damages in the coating with training of repair and a big bunch of repair materials. Now we have installed 97 pcs of coated piles and we have used only handful of repair patches. Our installation team has learned more gentle way to handle piles. I think this helps us also in normal projects, because they are handling also un-coated piles with more care.” Kai Jaakkola, Drilling supervisor, Lemminkäinen.

Our solution

RD® pile wall has been chosen as a retaining wall solution for parts of the Malmö hospital investment project. RD pile wall was chosen as a solution due to minimum vibration as well as minimum noise and disturbance to the surroundings compared to other solutions.

Customer case

Region Skåne in Sweden is investing heavily on building a new future hospital in Malmö. Malmö hospital area investments include two new health care buildings, a new service center and an expanded culvert system. The work is expected to be completed by 2022.

Regular scheduled deliveries took place between June and October 2016. First part of the RD pile wall was built for new hospital building with two levels of basements. Second part of the RD pile wall was built for the culvert F. Next spring there will be a need for one more RD pile wall for another culvert.

Project is located in the city center of Malmö. Limited storage space required well scheduled deliveries.

Our solution

SSAB's median barrier is an effective way of improving traffic safety. Median barriers are used on roads between opposing lanes to prevent collisions between vehicles.

SSAB C210/130X4 has replaced the old model of median barrier, Box beam. The aim was to develop economical solution for customer. Number of components has been minimized to achieve cost efficient installation. There are no special screws with limited availability required. Also cost efficiency of the median barrier system has been improved by introducing high-strength steel grades.

Customer case

Highway VT23 is 517 km long from Pori to Joensuu. Kypäräjärvi passing line is situated 80 km before Joensuu.

Kuu Ras Oy installed SSAB C210/130X4 median barriers in September. This was the first installation of SSAB C210/130X4 median barriers for Kuu Ras Oy. According to them this median barrier is faster and easier to install than the previous model, Box beam. The connection is better and it includes fewer screws which makes it faster to install.

Our solution

Original design of the project included significant amount of RR400/12.5 and RR320/12.5 piles. Those were replaced mostly by RRs220/10 due to material savings realized by stronger steel grade and better resistance-weight ratio. Alternative solution enabled also use of pile elements which resulted in time savings when splicing is easier and faster compared to splice welding. Also material waste is minimized when leftover piece can be utilized in next pile. Smaller diameter piles mean also less displacement and disturbance of soil in relation to the load-bearing capacity of the pile. Alternative solution resulted in 32% total cost savings. Cost savings in rock shoes was 64%. 

Customer case 

New hospital will be part of Central Finland Health Care District (KSSHP), which is the largest non-university hospital district in Finland. Hospital is built in Kukkumäki, Jyväskylä. Building project continues until 2020 and cost estimation is 398,5 m€.

Piling work is realized in two phases; 1st phase was done during Nov-Dec 2016 including 60% of the piling and 2nd phase is done during March-April 2017. Pile deliveries have been reliable and accurate. Piling has gone according to expectations and time schedule. Pile lengths corresponded quite accurately with the expectations based on soil investigation. Pile lengths have been 1.5-13.0 meters. Soil base is sandy and partly rocky, but it has not caused any problems like compaction.

Our solution

SSAB’s extensive delivery included 34 km of RR220/10 pile elements.  SSAB answered the demand from it’s customer Hercules Grundläggning AB; supplying large amount of piles and accessories quickly by using special flat trucks.

Customer case

The project is included in investment for the University Hospital that will double the base by 50% in 7 years. Land contract was one of the largest in modern times in the county.

The challenge for the customer was that the project was in Uppsala water catchment area which led to restrictions on equipment and materials.

Limited space and high production rate meant many machine units that occasionally prevented the other. This also put great demands on the exact material supplies.

The project expanded by about 40% when the average length was 17 m instead of the tendered 12 m.

Client’s demand included dimensioning of piles to manage load capacity of 1550 kN and dimensioning of sheet piles for excavation depths between 5-14 m. Sheet piles were delivered by Thyssenkrupp Bautechnik, total area of approximately 4 000 m².

SSAB’s delivery of the primary piles provided with factory-welded interlocks for the combi walls in exact lengths. Solution for combi walls based on a high-strength steel grade S550J2H including welded interlocks. Overall project costs were cut by reducing the total amount of steel used. Savings were totally 385 ton. 

Customer case

The industrial area in the Rotterdam harbor had to be expanded. For this a new area was reclaimed from the sea and new harbors and customer specific quay walls had to be build.

Our solution

SSAB’s extensive delivery of RR and RDs piles enabled the customer flexible delivery planning in a demanding construction project. SSAB’s high strength steel piles solution met the demanding load bearing capacity demands cost-effectively and with minor soil displacement. All RD piles were delivered S550 steel grade. Piles manufactured to the customer-specific length enabled fast installation. Longest piles delivered were 26 m (RDs320/10). RR pile elements enabled fast and effective installation.

Customer case

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, builds a bioproduct mill in Äänekoski in the area of the existing pulp mill. The construction work is scheduled to be completed during the third quarter of 2017. The new bioproduct mill in Äänekoski is the largest investment of the forest industry in Finland. The total investment will amount to approximately EUR 1.2 billion.

The challenge for the customer, Metsä Fibre, was to find a reliable partner who can deliver large piling solution committed to flexible and prompt deliveries. Customer’s tight project schedule and limited storage possibilities at site set demands for extremely flexible delivery schedule. Customer’s challenge was to find a solution for demanding loads due to heavy structures of the mill machinery.

“Selection of pile dimensions for drilling was very successful. Amount of waste was minimum, practically almost no waste. Also the amount of splices were minimum, only couple splices”, says Taneli Murtoperä, Lujabetoni Oy.

SSAB's high strength steel RDs320/10 pilewalls were installed to secure 2 stiff and watertight parallell constructions through clay and moraine. Traffic could continue safely next to the site, and the soil could be excavated between the 2 walls.

Customer case

Statens vegvesen is building 7 km new E18 in Larvik, next to both existing highway and the vulnerable Lake Farris. One of the two tunnels in the project, Larvik tunnel, consist of 2 800 m tunnel in rock and 310 m tunnel in soil.

The challenge was to find a secure and reliable way to excavate the 310 m pit for tunnel in soil, without interfering with traffic or the lake. The soil being very complex with both soft clay and dense moraine, it was hard to solve this with only sheetpiles as retaining walls for the excavation.
Drilling of RDs320/10 with RM/RF interlocks, sealed with bituminous sealant, was done to required depths to secure stiff and watertight retaining walls, before excavation.

Solution

SSAB delivered RD and RDs piles with threaded splicing to Betongsprutnings AB BESAB for large underpinning project to prevent excessive settlement of historical buildings. Cost savings were realized due to the replacement of steel core piles to RD piles and the use of high strength steel.

Customer case

Kv Pyramiden is located in Stockholm city center. Ten buildings established between 1898 and 1914 need underpinning to prevent excessive settlement. Each building was underpinned using 50 - 300 drilled RD piles with threaded splicing and each pile needed to be between 20 m and 25 m long to reach the bedrock. Drilling of piles was done with water powered drilling. 

Through the development of a custom made drop hammer, BESAB’s own design, the bearing capacity of the drilled RD piles could be measured even in the tightest of work spaces. This made it possible for BESAB, in agreement with the customer, to switch from steel core piles to RD piles. This change of piles lead to savings between 10% - 20% for the project. The usage of SSAB’s high strength steel piles in S550 grade contributed a lot to the savings.

Delivery (2016):

SSAB’s delivery content RD170/10, L=1-1,5 m RD170/12.5, L=1-1,5 m RDs170/10, L=1-1,5 m. In total 2 734 m = 2 666 pile elements.

RR® piles in Kv Högvakten, Sweden

Two different techniques for underpinning historical buildings

Solution

SSAB managed extensive delivery of 36 km of RR90 and RR115/6.3 short pile elements to Betongsprutnings AB BESAB. Project included underpinning of significant old buildings in the centre of Gothenburg.

Customer case

Four of Gothenburg’s oldest buildings needed underpinning due to excessive settlement. The underpinning used two different techniques. One technique was to core drill through the dry rubble, then drive RR piles on each side of the dry rubble and place a bearing beam on top of the driven RR piles which carries the weight of the building. All of the steel above ground was grouted for protection against corrosion.

The other technique used was zig-zag piling. Holes were core drilled with a slight incline through the wall and stone foundation. Then RR piles were driven through the holes to the hard bearing layer and cut from the bottom level of the foundation. Finally the holes in foundation were filled with concrete.

Delivery (2015-2016):

SSAB’s delivery content RR90, L=1-3 m and RR115/6.3, L=1-3 m. In total 36 000 m = 1 258 pile elements. Piles included rock shoes and bearing plates.

Our solution

Higher load-bearing capacity and lower costs can be achieved when upgrading to RRs pile range and high-strength S550J2H steel grade. In this case SSAB’s technical support checked through the geotechnical and structural designs and made alternative calculations for RRs piles. The amount of pile points remained the same to prevent huge changes to other foundation designs. Also the total amount of piles by length remained the same. The change was made for pile dimensions.

Customer case

Somero is a small municipality at the South Western Finland. Old Kiiruun school was demolished due to health issues.

All originally designed steel piles in standard piling steel grade S440J2H were replaced with SSAB’s RRs piles. Customer saved up to 60 000 € in piling, save of steel material was about 84 tons.

The soil conditions at the site are demanding. There is very soft clay layer of 25 meters, a sand layer and finally a moraine layer. Piles were embedded all the way down to the moraine layer to ensure sufficient bearing capacity. The length of the piles was varying from 29 to 35 meters.

"Piling work at the site became easier and faster due to the smaller dimension of the piles. Handling of the piles was easy because the bundles are clearly lighter”, says Toni Sillanpää, Auranmaan Teräspaaluttajat Oy.

Our solution

SSAB was able to produce and deliver special designed piles quickly and just in time taking into account any changes with the specification and time of delivery during the project.
Piles were delivered up to 46 m long and of two different wall thicknesses: 12.5mm lower part and 16.00mm upper part. All piles were fitted with an extra inside ring to increase pile bearing capacity. As it is a jetty type quay, delivery also included horizontal pipes.

Customer case

Tallinn is among the most popular destination for the cruise industry. To be able to handle the increasing number of cruise vessels the Vanasadama Cruise area had to be expanded and a new Cruise Quay had to be build.

The biggest challenge was to install very long 46 m inclined piles, 3:1, in one piece and within a very short time frame in open sea conditions.

Old sluice pier of Waitaki Power Station had been undermined. This pier separates the sluice water drawn from the dam and the turbine tailrace. The access to the pier is very restricted and confined causing challenges regarding the installation with heavy equipment.

Our solution

SSAB‘s RD pile walls was the best suitable solution for making retaining walls very close to existing stores and office buildings.

Customer case

Underneath the street Nedre Vollgate, a 250 m long supply tunnel for a new post- and goods reception for Stortinget (the Parliament) is to be build.

The challenges when building a tunnel below an existing street in Oslo are many. The area is cramped with little room to work, tight access and difficulties to store materials and equipment. Drilling is restricted to nights (after office hours) because of business running as usual in adjacent buildings.

A solution was needed for establishing retaining walls through varying soil conditions and securely into bedrock, very close to existing buildings. By using RD pile walls this is possible. Later the street can be excavated, the supply tunnel can be build and the street can be reestablished on top of the tunnel.

The designer Multiconsult AS found RD400/10 with RM/RF-interlocks to be best solution for this task, drilled 2 m into bedrock, and with interlocks sealed with Pertex. The total number of piles is currently predicted to be 436, and the lengths vary from 9 to 14 m.

Our solution

SSAB‘s RD pile wall solution enabled fast installation with tight tolerances. Accuracy and speed in addition to water tightness made RD pile wall best solution for the customer. Installation method was also least risky for the surroundings as removing the clay with auger creates little to no spatter. Piles were transported full-length sections. Exceptional length of the piles was up to 33,5 m (8,5 t).

Customer case

Pasila Tripla is three-block retail, office and housing complex to be built in Pasila district close to the city center of Helsinki. It will be completed in stages by the early 2020s.

Customer’s challenge was to find a watertight retaining wall solution to surround the 640 000m3 excavation for the garage. Location is critical right by a bridge with foot traffic, railway track and busy Pasilankatu street. Delivery and installation speed were critical for the customer: it was important to have piles delivered in one piece to avoid additional welding at site. The retaining wall cuts through groundwater layers, which exerts an enormous pressure on the underground structures making water-proofing the retaining wall demanding.

Our solution

Demand from customer was total construction. Dimensioning of piles according to existing standards. Safety was of the highest concern. Usage of RD-wall due to both soil conditions and aesthetics.

Customer case

The project was in Hedemora and regarded reinforcement of a stone wall. The stone wall had started to disintegrate and needed reinforcement.

Limited space and soft ground presented great challenges. The RD-pile wall-solution smoothly overcame the challenges, the toughest one being when the currently drilled pile started to pull down the pile next to it.

All pipes and pipe fittings are externally and internally coated. SSAB’s OV welded joint facilitates installation and allows 2,0 degree bends at joints.

Customer case

Vestfold Vann IKS has been established 1968 and is owned together by 10 municipalities in Vestfold county in south part of Norway. The mission of Vesfolf Vann IKS is to offer the partners drinking water of good quality.

The biggest challenge is to transport and move 16 m long and 5 tons heavy pipes to wet fields before installation within a very short time frame and in very variable winter conditions.

This SSAB’s delivery content includes 1500 m of coated DN600-800 water pipes and fittings. Delivery consist of mainly 8 m long pipes and butt joint or DIN/G-welded joints. All pipes and pipe fittings are externally and internally coated. Externally 3 mm HDPE-coating was used to ensure very long lifetime against corrosion. Internally was used cement mortar lining.

SSAB’s mechanical splices also to larger RD pile sizes answer the increasing customer demand. Threaded pile element RD270 was first used in this project. Mechanical splicing eliminates the need for splice welding at site. When splicing of a pile is done mechanically, many weather conditions related problems can be avoided at the construction site. The high-quality of the splicing remains good in all weather conditions.

Customer case

Project Skeppsholmspiren was located in harbor in Uddevalla. Uddevalla is situated on the Swedish West Coast, north of Gothenburg and south of Oslo.

Due to the demanding conditions at site, customer chose to use drilled steel piles. Original design with concrete piles was rejected because the inclination of surface of the bedrock was too steep. The solution was RD270/12.5 piles with threaded mechanical splices. The bottom elements of piles were 14 m long and the length of the upper pile elements varied. Piling was managed to finish couple days earlier than planned. Also work safety at site was improved compared to welding.

“We were very satisfied with the product. The piles were easy to handle at the site since there were no heavy sleeves. Time savings were remarkable when there was no need for welding outside. Thanks to the mechanical splicing, the weather conditions didn’t play any role in the progress of the piling work. Threads worked well in all conditions”, says Victor Gillholm, Skanska Grundläggning.

The harbor in Ust-Luga need to be protected from the sea. The break water will be completed in stages between 2013 and 2017.

SSAB's RD pile walls, in combination with sheet piles, was the best way to make “boxes” for 8 of the 10 foundations, close to the highway and in coarse and dense soil.

CUSTOMER CASE

Statens vegvesen is building 7 km new E18 in Larvik, next to both existing highway and the vulnerable Lake Farris. The new Farris Bridge is a separate contract with all its complexity. The bridge is 570 m long and 28 m wide, consisting of 10 foundations.

The challenges consist of different aspects: the vicinity to existing highway and Lake Farris, and the depths to bedrock (20-80 m) in combination with the varying soil conditions.

SSAB’s customer made 8 “boxes” with different combinations of RD pile walls and sheet piles depending on soil conditions. Within each “box” RR piles and drilled piles were installed to take the future loads of the new bridge.

Our solution

SSAB delivered an RD® - pile wall which is developed to ensure reliable results corresponding to design specifications in even the most difficult conditions.

The RD® pile wall structure is installed by drilling, and replaces separate retaining wall and foundation structures, minimizing build times and generating savings in overall project cost. In addition, SSAB´s lock type – RM/RF – ensures the best possible watertightness in wall structures.

SSAB delivered a 170 m long drilled steel pile wall (totally 1680 m2) with an interlock system. The piles are attached to each other by interlocking sections assuring the wall the best possible watertightness.

Customer case

The Vojmsjön reservoir dam receives large amount of melt water from the surrounding mountains. At peak flow, the dam is filled in less than a week. To give a sealing for the dam the SSAB RD® pile wall with interlocking system was utilised to assure the watertightness. As the spring flood can be severe in Lapland the timeframe for the dam rehabilitation project was quite tight.

Our solution

Effective utilization of SSAB’s sub contractor network enabled us to serve all customer’s steel structure needs. Customer received all needed steel structures for the project from one reliable supplier fast and accurately.

New combi wall solution was used, in which the steel piles were manufactured from extra high strength steel with high load bearing capacity. Piles were the longest (33.5 m) and heaviest (20 tons/ each) that had been delivered in Finland so far.

Customer case

Investment in Kokkola harbour included extension of deep quay: Silverstone quay 1 and Silverstone quay 2. Investment enables increasing the capacity of the harbour. New lay-out of the port area has been designed to support the competitive pricing of Port of Kokkola. 

The challenge for the customer was to find a partner to deliver all needed steel structures for harbour piers. Fast and accurate delivery was demanded.

SSAB's supplied the ready to be installed Dolphins just in time on site. Dolphins has been re-designed in higher steel grade (Optim 500ML) and has been supplied including coating. Also loose pile heads have been supplied for further processing by the customer.

Customer case

The existing jetties 1 & 2 need to be renovated to suit future vessel sizes. The work is executed in different phases and starts with demolishing the existing jetties. Each phase needs to be executed within only 3 weeks. As part of phase 1 two new dolphins need to be installed.

Absolutely essential is that the dolphins are supplied as agreed since heavy and expensive equipment has been scheduled according to the planning.

SSAB's watertight RD pile wall was a reliable solution in terms of technical elements and schedule. SSAB's watertight RD pile wall was used to ensure and enable safe and rapid building of wide underground spaces and access tunnels that reach ten meters below sea level.

Customer case

New residential area of Kalasatama, REDI, consist of six residential towers, one office and one hotel tower. At the base of the towers will be the largest shopping and lifestyle centre in Helsinki’s inner city. Redi is located at the intersection of three major arterial roads by the sea. The shopping centre opens in 2017, and the first residential tower will be ready for occupants around 2018. By 2022, REDI will be completed.

The challenge for the customer was to build a watertight and permanent retaining wall in the sea landfill on a tight schedule. Also, the connection between the wall and rock had to be secure.
