It involves intentionally curving or arching the dies used in a bending machine. The purpose of crowning is to compensate for deflection that occurs during the bending process, ensuring that the material is bent uniformly along its entire length.
When long and slender materials—such as sheets or plates—are bent, the weight and pressure applied can cause the material to sag or bow in the middle. This deflection leads to uneven bending, where the center of the material experiences less deformation than the edges.
Crowning helps to counteract this effect by adjusting the die geometry, resulting in more consistent bend angles and improved part quality.

Crowning helps to achieve more uniform and precise bending of the material. By compensating for deflection, the material is evenly supported and bent along its length, resulting in a more accurate final shape. This can be achieved through shimming, a technique where thin adjustment plates are placed under the tooling to fine-tune the die height and correct for deflection.
