Steel Pile News

The Advanced FEM section of the PileCalc has been updated

Defining of lateral support at the pile top can now be specified more accurately and flexibly.

The lateral support settings for the pile top have been improved. The new options allow different support conditions to be defined for the calculation of the pile's initial buckling shape and for the actual buckling analysis. These new alternatives enable more accurate and versatile calculations than before.

The updated support definition allows the following lateral support conditions at the pile head:

  • Completely free support.
The pile head is not laterally supported either in the calculation of the initial buckling shape or in the actual buckling analysis. As a result, the pile head may already experience a relatively large lateral displacement in the initial shape.

  • Lateral displacement fully restrained.
The pile head is prevented from moving laterally throughout the entire calculation process. This is the typical situation in structures where horizontal loads are not transferred to vertical piles.

  • Lateral displacement restrained in the initial shape calculation.
The initial buckling mode of the pile is calculated with the pile head laterally supported, while lateral displacement is allowed in the actual buckling analysis. This calculation model is best suited for situations where horizontal loads are transferred to vertical piles.

  • Lateral displacement allowed in the initial shape calculation but restrained in the buckling analysis.
Mainly a theoretical case. It may be applicable in certain rare situations.

  • Lateral support from the pile cap.
When lateral displacement is not restrained, it is possible to use lateral support provided by the pile cap. In this case, the nonlinear force-displacement relationship of the foundation in the lateral direction is defined.

Where to find the PileCalc program

PileCalc as well as PileWallCalc program for SSAB pile products are available for free at SSABTubular Design Tools. From the same place you can also find FrameCalc and FrameFEM design tools for steel structures.

More information on RR® and RD® piles and RD® pile wall can be found from www.ssab.com/infra
