Updated manuals and a totally new Appendix
Preheating and cooling of splice welds
Appendix 5 for the Design and installation manual of RR® and RD® piles has been updated. The Appendix considers preheating and cooling of splice welds. There have been some updates to the EN standards, some updated values for weld consumables and the tables for required preheat have been re-calculated with the latest material properties.
The Appendix 5 gives instructions on preheat of the piles before welding. Required preheat depends on the material properties of the steel and weld consumable. It is used to avoid possible hydrogen cracking in the welds. Preheat delays the cooling of the weld region and therefore promotes hydrogen effusion. Preheat also reduces the state of internal stresses. The preheat temperatures given in the Appendix 5 have been calculated according to methods given in EN 1011-2 standard.
Beside instructions for preheat, the Appendix 5 gives also instructions for cooling of the welds before performing a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). It presents the correct hold times for SSAB Pile products based on the instructions given in EN 1090-2. For steel grade S550J2H the instructions in EN 1090-2 have been updated and now these new instructions have been implemented to the Appendix 5.
Naturally the Appendix 5 can be applied for RR and RD piles, but also for RD pile walls.
Resistance tables for RR® and RD® piles in Sweden
The Appendixes A and B for the Swedish version of the Design and installation manual for RR and RD piles contain vast amount of pre-calculated table values for the resistances of RR and RD piles. The tables include resistance values for geotechnical resistances and for structural buckling resistances.
The new values have been calculated with the latest version of PileCalc, the free-to-use design tool for SSAB Pile products. The calculations for composite effect piles follow the instructions given in the Pålkommissionen report 108.
Totally new Appendix 1 for the Design and installation manual for RD® pile walls
This totally new Appendix 1 gives several examples for structural details and possible methods for implementation of RD pile wall structures. It supplements the manual by offering more information and ideas on several details related to RD pile walls.
The content of the Appendix 1 answers to many questions raised up during the past 15 years and over 350 projects accomplished with RD pile walls. It gives more detailed instructions for example on execution of splice welding of tubular piles equipped with connectors. It also shows some examples on details which can be used for external and internal support structures used with RD pile walls.
