SSAB and Accenture have signed a long-term framework agreement to provide consulting and technology services to support SSAB’s transformation to fossil-free steel. Accenture will lead the design and implementation of the business technology platform covering multiple areas and processes of the new mini-mills, starting with the first implementation at the mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden.

SSAB has taken a policy decision to fundamentally transform Nordic strip production and accelerate the company’s green transition. The decision was taken against the background of strongly growing demand for fossil-free steel. The plan is to replace the existing system with new mini-mill technology, which will result in a broader product program and improved cost position.

Under the framework agreement, Accenture will be responsible for the design, implementation, testing and roll-out of the target business processes and supporting the IT environment for operational Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), including the necessary integrations with the existing environment and solutions.

The scope of the framework agreement includes organization change management, design for the business technology platform as well implementation of the solution in the mini-mills. Accenture will apply its deep experience in business platform solutions combined with its expertise in the metals and steel industry, thus supporting the creation of a strong technology backbone for fossil-free steel production at SSAB mini-mills.

The first implementation of the technology solution is planned for the fossil-free mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden. When completed, SSAB will close the existing blast furnace-based production system. This will reduce Sweden’s CO2 emissions by 7% in addition to the 3% from the Oxelösund mill conversion. The total mini-mill investment in Luleå is estimated to be EUR 4.5 billion including contingencies.

“The agreement with Accenture will provide SSAB access to technological expertise and experience in business technology platform implementation and organizational change management, thus making our journey to fossil-free steel more efficient,” said Niko Korte, VP, Head of Fossil-Free Business Platforms at SSAB.

“We are proud to collaborate with SSAB to build a better planet for future generations. We are both committed to a sustainable future. This is a first step in what we hope will be a long-term relationship as SSAB transforms the steel industry” said Fredrik Engdar, a Managing Director at Accenture.
