SCHWING America redesigned its Loop-Belt truck mounted telescopic conveyors using Strenx® performance steel to give customers a sharper competitive edge. By switching to Strenx® steel in key areas, engineers created a new line that is strong, yet lightweight, delivering simplified permitting, and the industry’s lightest conveyor design.

SCHWING America specializes in producing truck-mounted concrete pumps, stationary concrete pumps, truck mixers, batch plants, and reclaimers as a leading designer and manufacturer of premium concrete production and handling equipment in North America.  The company serves a specialized customer base who seeks high quality, durable equipment for challenging, demanding construction sites.

Customers wanted greater mobility, lower operating costs, and fewer logistical hurdles — without sacrificing strength or durability. The company’s original design weighed more than 84,000 pounds, requiring operators to secure special permits to get onto their job sites.

“As we were seeing what the market needed, 80,000 pounds is the magic number for the larger loop belts,” explains Scott Roisum, SCHWING America VP of Operations. “If you’re below, you can get into many more states on four axels rather than five. Permitting is easier. Operators can qualify for annual permits instead of daily trip permits.“

Overcoming a hefty challenge using Strenx® steel

SCHWING America evaluated alternative materials that could deliver higher strength at a lower weight. Then, working closely with the technical development team at SSAB, the company’s engineering team focused on core components to maximize weight reduction without sacrificing strength. Using a combination of Strenx® 700 tubes, Strenx® 700 E and Strenx® 110 XF, across the design, the team found the new material significantly outperformed what was specified in previous designs.

“The tensile strength from the tubing we were using was about 47,000 psi,” explains Steve Caflisch, SCHWING America Product Engineer. “We were able to get a product from SSAB, which is in a lot of cases above 100, so we doubled strength.”

Beyond weight reduction and operator’s benefits, Strenx® tubes also provided Schwing America with long-term manufacturing advantages. The material’s predictable performance supports efficient fabrication and helps future-proof the design to meet evolving customer needs.

Design a competitive advantage

With Strenx® performance steel, engineers increased strength while reducing overall steel thickness. Following extensive analysis and field testing, engineers confirmed the design met the high-quality performance standards needed to meet customer demands.

SCHWING America moved confidently from design validation to production implementation by tapping into local technical development support and knowing they had access to a verifiable material certification process by SSAB.

“When the customer requested to go lighter and stronger, we knew there was plenty of opportunity, and we had the knowledge behind us to do it,” explains Paul Courneya, SCHWING America Director of Product Quality. “With the design changes and using Strenx® 690, our loop belts are now the lightest in the industry.”

Making friends in the workshop

Strenx® steel’s consistent quality enabled the production line to quickly adapt it into manufacturing processes. The material’s repeatable performance supported the company’s high standards for first-class forming and welding.

Introducing Strenx® performance steel into any manufacturing  workshop requires an initial introduction to provide proper training and set-up adjustments. For many operations, this is a smooth transition because the material’s guaranteed tolerances for flatness and bending, it quickly finds favor with fabricators. SCHWING America’s production line counts on this repeatable consistency for efficient manufacturing.
