Find out how high a Horyong aerial lift truck reaches for the sky with Strenx® high-strength steel, and delivers the quality, safety and durability that customers want – along with peace of mind.

As urbanization continues to increase across the world, the need for more homes and buildings is also intensifying the demand for heavy equipment that is safe and durable. Horyong from South Korea meets this need by producing aerial lift cranes that combine the highest level of design with the highest level of quality.

It does this by specifying high-performance Strenx® steel – almost exclusively – for most of its mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP) that require operators to work safely at heights in often hard-to-access locations.

90-95% Strenx® used for safety in high-reaching mobile elevating work platforms

Soo-jeong Lee, senior researcher at Horyong, explains what the company’s customers are looking for in a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP).

“I think that safety is the most important sector for our customers, and our equipment is known to be durable,” she says.

This is one major reason why the company uses a variety of high yield-strength grades in its aerial lift trucks and other vehicles. Horyong uses a combination of Strenx® 700, Strenx® 900 and Strenx® 960 steels. With yield strengths of 700 MPa (101.5 ksi) and above, Strenx® can be stressed much higher than S355 steel, for example. This means thinner dimensions can be used at the same load levels or the load level can be higher when the same dimensions are used. Either way, higher yield strength will improve both production and performance.

Soo-jeong Lee continues:
“When we design our aerial lift trucks and ladder lift trucks for operations in high places, we use 90 to 95 percent Strenx® performance steel in the equipment. Strenx® steel is reliable and gives the customers the trustworthiness they seek. Because, when operating in such high places a lot of shaking and bending can cause dangerous situations that customers of course want to avoid,” she says.

“Safety and durability are top priorities for our customers. They rely on our products and trust Strenx® performance steel”

High reach, high-tech and high strength

From Horyong’s 68,359 m² (735,810 sq.ft.) plant in Gimje, the company ships its aerial lift trucks, boom crane trucks, and eco-friendly electric-powered carry-deck cranes across the country. It also exports its products to countries around the world.

Truck-mounted aerial lifts are mainly used in construction and on work sites situated in high places, such as for building maintenance. With nearly 30 years of R&D under its belt, Horyong produces the tallest ladder lift and aerial-lift trucks in South Korea – the highest of these reaching 75 meters (246 ft.) up in the sky. To make the trucks become more efficient by lifting more material and reaching higher up, the structure needs to be as light as possible while retaining its strength.

“Strenx® steel improves the quality of our products. By making vehicles out of Strenx® performance steel, I think we’ll be able to reduce excessive weight and continue to achieve even more innovative designs,” Lee says.

New and improved aerial lift truck designs in the pipeline

According to Horyong’s sales manager Park Cheol, lightweight yet high-strength MEWPs made in high-strength structural steel will help the company to innovate new and improved products.

“We use Strenx® steels because we want to keep up with the current global trend, which is making equipment lightweight. I think that this is something we can utilize in the future in the heavy equipment market to reduce weight and become even more efficient,” Cheol says.

My Inner Strenx® membership for higher brand awareness in global markets

Horyong is a qualified member of the My Inner Strenx® program and proudly displays the My Inner Strenx® sticker on its certified equipment.

“The certification means our customers rely on our products as they trust SSAB’s products,” Soo-jeong Lee says.

Park Cheol enjoys the benefits of the close relationship the company has with SSAB as a program member.

“Because we are part of the My Inner Strenx® program, SSAB provides us with extensive and prioritized support on the technicalities of the steels. So, we can learn more about how we can use them and consequently develop new products. I'm sure that this collaboration is going to continue to bring us even better results in the future,” he says.

Customer benefits

  • Consistent material properties, including tight thickness and flatness guarantees, enable them to build more stable booms.
  • Extensive design and product support from SSAB, especially on welding and forming.
  • Designers experience the same ease designing with high-strength Strenx as for alternative materials.
  • Strenx® benefits safety-critical aerial work platforms, helping make the vehicles comfortable and booms easy to operate
  • Reduced weight while strength maintained
