Curran Contracting’s Hardox® wear plate asphalt dryer flights save estimated $10K in labor costs. Watch how James Cassem the Asset Director at Curran Contracting ramps up efficiency, seizes savings and stokes the company’s material production by upgrading asphalt dryer wear parts to Hardox® wear plate.
Curran Contracting is known for high-performance infrastructure work — mass excavation, site development, asphalt paving, and road construction. With three high-capacity asphalt production plants in Illinois and more than 1,200 pieces of yellow iron running daily, uptime is everything. Their goal is simple: keep material moving, keep plants producing, and avoid costly interruptions.
“Our high-capacity plants run the newest, state-of-the-art equipment and mixers to meet project requirements,” explains Cassem. “We’re continually adding new and innovative products to our processes and operations to meet our customers’ demands for high quality.”

“We ran 250,000 tons across them and had no wear at all,” says Cassem. “We estimate a $10,000 per year in labor savings alone, and that’s not including the reductions in downtime or cost of emergency maintenance repairs.”
With an eye on continuous improvement, Cassem spotted a production bottleneck within the asphalt production process that frequently halted operations, bringing costly labor for repairs and expensive downtime.
The problem centered around the asphalt dryer, which must withstand not only the abrasive aggregate moving through the drum at 300 to 450 tons per hour, but also intense heat with shell temperatures reaching up to 650°F (343.33°C). Inside the drum, the flights (also known as “buckets”) lift and cascade the aggregate to ensure even drying. These components face relentless heat, abrasion, and impact.

“Hardox® is the Cadillac of steel. It can take a lot of abuse,” Bauer says. ”Through our 40 years of experience with Hardox® products, we have developed industry-leading techniques in collaboration with end-users. Every part is custom-made according to my client’s specifications in our production facility, centrally located in Rockford, Illinois.”
Bauer recognized how the original material was not formulated specifically for environments with excessive heat and abrasion.
To illustrate the difference, Bauer compared two identical dryer cups side by side:
According to Bauer, the material is designed for temperatures up to 950°F, far beyond the 375°F threshold of standard AR steel, and even if it turns cherry-red, Hardox® maintains performance. Curran installed the first Hardox® wear plate flights and monitored performance closely.
Immediate impacts from the initial upgrade:
Curran began with five units. Now they’re operating 60 Hardox® wear plate flights across their operation. The improved durability and reliability give Curran a measurable competitive advantage in a demanding, nonstop industry.
Cassem concludes, “Nothing has shown as much benefit as the Hardox® product we’re using. No regrets at all. I’d make that decision a thousand times over.”
