The Eel Pie Hotel in London first rose to fame in the 1960s as a venue that hosted many artists that would soon rise to world fame, including The Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton and David Bowie. The hotel has since then burnt down, but the residential island, located in the middle of London’s River Thames, is still renowned for its artistic community.
After purchasing the site of the old hotel, it took seven years for architect Henry Harrison to get planning permission for his new residence. However, the final result is spectacular. The new building boasts a unique and modern design, yet is still consistent with the island’s character, merging in with the boat sheds that still operate along the island’s riverbank. In the building’s distinctive steel roof, Harrison used around five tonnes of PLX. “It looks very crisp and clean, and is fully compatible with the rest of the building’s design and materials,” says Sean McHugh from Newell Roofing, who, as UK and Ireland SSAB distributors of PLX, supplied the steel and assisted with design and installation logistics.
“PLX is also incredibly easy to work with. It does exactly what you want it to, with zero spring-back. That’s important in a project like this where there is a lot of detailing and every millimeter can make a difference.” Newell Roofing, who has worked extensively with PLX, was confident it would be the perfect choice for this project. “PLX offers the same formability as zinc and copper, but expands and contracts half as much,” adds Barry Newell of Newell Roofing. “At the same time, it still retains the properties of steel. It is just as strong and there is no cracking of the seams when installing in cold weather.”
The building’s environmental impact was also under consideration. Again, PLX was able to offer unique benefits, since it has an environmental coating and its raw materials are recyclable. Newell Roofing was also able to offer a 30-year guarantee, backed up by SSAB, thus ensuring longevity.
Founded in 1964, Teräselementti Oy is a Finnish family business specializing in hall construction, steel building frames and facade solutions for commercial buildings. The company supplies its products primarily on a turnkey basis, including product design, manufacture and installation services. Projects are realized either as design-build projects or according to client plans. Additionally, some of its facade products are also supplied without the service package.
Maximum column-free space at minimum cost
Located in the Finnish capital of Helsinki, the exhibition and convention center is the largest of its kind in the country, welcoming over a million visitors annually. A new hall, Exhibition Hall 7, was envisioned to be a multi-purpose hall with maximum column-free space.
With a surface area of 14,700 m² (nearly 158, 235 ft²), the sheer size and weight of the trusses posed challenges for producing suitable elements for the hall’s steel frame. In addition, the frame had to be as economical as possible.
Best results with double-grade steel
The project called for a steel grade that would allow constructing a 78-meter, column-free area. The steel frame consists of 17 individual 78-meter space trusses with a maximum height of 7 meters and maximum width of 3.5 meters, each weighing between 65 to 80 tonnes. Each truss consisted of two 39-meter segments. Teräselementti Oy, contracted for constructing the frame, used double-grade S420MH / S355J2H hollow sections as the material for the steel frame’s space trusses. The light, high-strength double grade combines the best properties of both S420MH and S355J2H grades.
Construction of the steel frame for Exhibition Hall 7 began in June 2010, and the expansion project was successfully completed in August 2011.
A lighter construction
SSAB’s double-grade structural hollow sections can be used to build structures that are more than 15 percent lighter. During the expansion project, the structural properties of the S420 steel meant that uniform sections could be used even in places subject to greater loads. Sections with identical external radii could be used. And approximately 100 tonnes less steel was needed than if S355 steel had been used. With S420, only about 1,700 tonnes of steel was used for the expansion.
An affordable solution
Using double-grade steel in steel structures substantially lowers material costs, providing a financially attractive option. It also reduces the environmental effects of the material use and production. Also, using double-grade hollow sections decreases storage costs. “Double grade’s benefits for the builder were clear during the expansion project: It resulted in a lighter, more economical solution,” says Markku Laine, head of steel construction operations at Teräselementti Oy.
The steel tubes were delivered cut to length directly from the factory to the client, allowing them to cut down on additional welding costs.
Seamless collaboration
Teräselementti and Ruukki (now part of SSAB) cooperated seamlessly during the Exhibition & Convention Centre expansion project. Roughly 70–75% of the material requirements were known right from the project’s start, allowing Teräselementti to instantly reserve the required production volume.
Even when the builder made substantial changes to the plans during the final phase of the project, necessitating extra material, Teräselementti got the last-minute material and kept the project right on schedule.
When the architects planned the new De Grote Prins housing project, they strove to achieve a light facade concept that would make the buildings always look like new. This concept was considered integral to the property’s personality and for enhancing the property value. At the same time, future maintenance costs and a reasonable solution for the owners both played an important role in the design requirements.
When SSAB presented GreenCoat steel to the working group on the De Grote Prins project, the material met their requirements. Its combination of proven properties and the new self-cleaning function was cost efficient and opened the door to architects to create an attractive façade.
The external surface has self-cleaning properties, making the material ideal for buildings that must meet high aesthetic demands. Underlying the self-cleaning properties, a special additive is mixed into the paint. The result is a paint coating that prevents dirt and impurities from sticking and that is effectively rinsed away by rain. The paint coating is highly weather and wear resistant.
Construction company and architects introduced new customer benefits through GreenCoat steel’s self-cleaning properties.
Optimal façade solution helps lower maintenance costs and improve housing environment.
Light, aesthetically pleasing and maintenance-free material keeps facades looking like new.
Security gained by using a well-proven, durable material from a market leader.
SSAB wanted to produce a color coating that could contribute to a better environment while still maintaining high quality standards. The vision was to use renewable, natural raw materials for the paint and thereby reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based oil, a finite resource that also increases CO₂ emissions. And Sofiahemmet Hospital needed a new roof that could withstand temperamental Swedish weather conditions yet be gentle on the environment.
The project began as an experiment in 2007, when Arne Jonaeson at the tinsmith company Jonaeson & Wendel used GreenCoat steel with the environmental-friendly coating for long-strip panel roofing. The response came quickly. Jonaeson and his employees liked GreenCoat. It was easy to work with and less sensitive to scratching.
During 2007-2011, Jonaeson & Wendel used GreenCoat on the roofs of the Sophiahemmet Hospital and for several other projects. In addition to the coating’s practical benefits, Jonaeson values the environmental benefit.
“We look at GreenCoat as an environmental investment for our company,” says Jonaeson.
Since the environmental-friendly coating was introduced, it has undergone rigorous tests in highly exposed locations. The product has been subjected to strong sunlight, salt spray from the ocean and great temperature differences to confirm its good corrosion properties and color stability. GreenCoat steel is continually undergoing testing in places like the west coast of Sweden, Florida and Arizona in the United States, the West Indies, China, Australia, and on the coast of France.
GreenCoat provides benefits throughout the chain, from manufacturing to final product use:
Minimizes environmental footprint.
Is highly durable. The color-coated surface exhibits good mechanical resistance and can withstand tough climates.
Possesses good formability and less sensitivity to cracking.
Comes with a corrosion and finish guarantee.
In 2012, a mighty sight emerged on the landscape just outside of Stockholm: Friends Arena. One of the biggest multipurpose stadiums in northern Europe and home to Sweden’s national soccer team, it contains seating for 65,000 spectators, a retractable roof for all-weather events and more than 4,000 tonnes of steel from SSAB.
Thanks to a reputation for reliability as well as expertise in high-strength steel and large-scale construction projects, SSAB was entrusted with the fabrication, delivery and installation of steel frame structures and nearly 270,000 square feet (25,000 square meters) of roof elements.
“Reliable partners for demanding large-scale building projects can be counted on one hand,” says Erik Westman, project manager at Peab, the general contractor for the project. “Their reputation and our previous experiences with the company made supplier selection easy for us. Solid project and design expertise is essential in complicated building projects, especially since we always tend to work against the clock and the forces of nature.”
The delivery mainly consisted of Strenx™ 900*, a stronger, lighter and longer lasting steel than conventional steel. Friends Arena also uses SSAB’s RD and RR piling in the foundation.
The arena was built around a framework of advanced high-strength steels, with yield strengths of 460, 900 and 960 MPa, to provide a roof span of 532 feet (162 m) with a thin and light design to fully exploit the daylight. Four custom-made trusses, each weighing 550 tonnes, support the roof. Its rafter bars are 531 feet long (162 m), stand 52 feet tall (16 m) and are 49 feet (15 m) wide. To ensure that the retractable roof structure would work as intended, the installation tolerances for the huge steel structures were extremely tight.
The high degree of prefabrication of the structures helped reduce construction risks and improve safety at the site.
With one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios, steel is lighter than any other material. This reduces the foundation requirements for any building made of steel, from skyscrapers to aircraft hangars or public arenas. And high-strength steels in particular are becoming more critical to industries wanting to make products that are simultaneously lightweight, highly durable and more energy efficient.
Strenx performance steel lasts longer than conventional steel, thus reducing material costs and the energy needed at the production stage. And because less steel is needed, less needs to be transported. All in all, the use of special steels reduced the weight of the trusses at Friends Arena by nearly 600 tonnes — an estimated 70% compared to conventional steel — at a value of 2 million euros. These cost savings were mainly due to fewer welded joints and lower heating temperatures when welding the high-strength steels.
Sometimes words like sustainability, material efficiency and energy efficiency sound a bit vague. Here are some numbers that quantify the benefits of the project.
The challenging Friends Arena project showed that high-strength steels in supersized structures pose a viable solution to help lower whole-of-project costs, simplify handling of structural elements and encourage sustainable construction.
