WEATHERING STEEL FOR PROTECTION OF STRUCTURES AND BRIDGES

COR-TEN® is a licensed brand and a part of the SSAB Weathering steel family.

SSAB Weathering and COR-TEN® are corrosion resistant steels that save costs from day one. This makes them ideal bridge material. Unlike most steel structures, SSAB Weathering steels do not need painting – which significantly reduces maintenance costs. And if a weathering steel bridge or structure is painted, re-painting is required much less frequently than with conventional steel.

As high-strength is essential for bridge and structure material, SSAB Weathering and COR-TEN® steels have a yield strength up to 960 MPa. This enables the design of lighter structures that are easier to transport and erect. Furthermore, just like conventional steel, weathering steel facilitates many of the demands of new bridge structure projects, such as rapid construction, flexible design, variable construction depths, and on top of that it looks amazing. SSAB Weathering steels are used by proud bridge builders and financiers around the world.

Maintained by rust

Thanks to the outer layer of rust that is created in the oxidization phase of aging, SSAB Weathering and COR-TEN® steel structures do not need painting. The patina behaves in a similar way to paint, protecting the steel below the surface. However, it doesn’t peel or crack and need replacing. This obviously saves considerable maintenance costs both in terms of money and time. In fact, as the oxidation process occurs naturally in weathering steels, no treatment is required and initial production costs are therefore lower.

If paint is used on an SSAB Weathering steel bridge or structure, painting is required less frequently.

Environmentally-friendly steel

SSAB Weathering and COR-TEN® steels have a much smaller environmental footprint than conventional steel. The emissions and pollution of surrounding areas caused by painting and stripping (pre-repainting) can be completely avoided if the bridge is left unpainted. SSAB Weathering steels are also 100% recyclable, a key selling point for many large-scale infrastructure projects today.

Weathering steels can also be used as a substitute for wood, in which case the use of harmful impregnating agents is avoided.

To paint or not to paint – you decide

With most bridge and structure materials you do not get a choice, they either have to be painted, such as conventional steel, or they should be left untreated such as concrete. However, with SSAB Weathering and COR-TEN® steels both options work.

When painting, you can rely on good paint adhesion thanks to the steel texture. The hard-wearing properties of the steel also provide a “self-healing effect” that minimizes corrosion creepage.

Additionally, porous expanding rust is not an issue in SSAB Weathering steel structures – as is the case for carbon steel. All in all these factors mean that the useful life of paint on weathering steel is twice that of paint on conventional steel. As a rule of thumb, you need to paint a conventional steel bridge twice as often as a bridge made from SSAB Weathering steel. This also means that painted weathering steel looks better for longer.

SSAB Weathering steel: Landscape-friendly material

The appearance of a structure is an important consideration for any infrastructure project, particularly large-scale structures such as bridges, or towers.  The patina of SSAB Weathering steels are renowned for the way they blend in with their surroundings, particularly in the countryside. They can also act as a softening tone, when used in conjunction with concrete or other structural materials that can be overbearing on their own.

It’s important to note that the color and texture of weathering steels vary over time and with exposure to climatic conditions.
