Reinventing an artistic landmark with GreenCoat PLX Pro BT

Project: Eel Pie Hotel, roofing solution, UK

Target: Create a building that boasts a unique and modern design

Product: GreenCoat PLX Pro BT

The Eel Pie Hotel in London first rose to fame in the 1960's as a venue that hosted many artists that would soon become world famous. The hotel has since burnt down, but the site on this artistic, residential island, in London’s River Thames, is where architect Henry Harrison chose to make his unique home.

The final result of architect Henry Harrison’s home is spectacular. The new building boasts a unique and modern design, yet is still consistent with the island’s character, merging in with the boat sheds that still operate along the island’s riverbank.

In the building’s distinctive steel roof, Harrison decided to use the color coated product GreenCoat PLX Pro BT from SSAB. The result is a very crisp and clean look that is fully compatible with the rest of the building’s design and materials.

The company Newell Roofing, who is a distributor of GreenCoat PLX Pro BT in the UK and Ireland, supplied the product and assisted with design and installation logistics.

Sean McHugh from Newell Roofing explains why:
“GreenCoat PLX Pro BT is incredibly easy to work with. It does exactly what you want it to, with zero spring-back. That’s important in a project like this where there is a lot of detailing and every millimeter can make a difference.”

Newell Roofing, who has worked extensively with GreenCoat PLX Pro BT, was confident it would be the perfect choice for this project. GreenCoat PLX Pro BT offers the same formability as zinc and copper, but expands and contracts half as much. At the same time, it still retains the steel properties. It is just as strong and there is no cracking of the seams when installing in temperatures down to -15 degrees Celsius.

The building’s environmental impact was also under consideration. GreenCoat PLX Pro BT was able to offer unique benefits, since it features a patented, Bio-based Technology (BT) with a substantial portion of the traditional fossil part replaced by a bio-based component – something unique in the field of roofing. Newell Roofing was also able to offer a 30-year guarantee, backed up by SSAB, thus ensuring longevity.

GreenCoat PLX Pro BT - Practical benefits for tinsmiths

Project: Mulino Di Terenzano Pozzuolo, Italy

Target: Reconstructed water mill

Product: GreenCoat PLX Pro BT

Near the Italian town of Pozzuolo, the ancient Terenzano water mill, which dates back over 500 years, has been redesigned and restored in a way that has attracted much attention. Aesthetics and quality were major themes in this restoration project.

The goal of the Terenzano renovation project was to create an environmentally conscious building that blends a rich history with contemporary trends. Material choice was of the utmost importance in order to create a stunning result. After an extensive review, the color coated steel GreenCoat PLX Pro BT was chosen for the roof due to its many practical benefits as well as its low impact on the environment. GreenCoat PLX Pro BT features a bio-based Technology (BT) with a substantial portion of the traditional fossil part replaced by a bio-based alternative. This unique, patented solution by SSAB reduces the environmental footprint significantly. During the roof installation, tinsmiths were able to perform a number of detailed hand forming procedures with GreenCoat PLX Pro BT in order to obtain the low profile look. They also experienced GreenCoat PLX Pro BT to be highly scratch resistant.

Another important factor for the roof was weight. Due to the age of the foundation, the low weight of GreenCoat PLX Pro BT was advantageous in reducing stress on the old structures.

Furthermore, because of the high UV levels present in northern Italy, the architect and contractor wanted to maximize color retention by using color coated steel that is known for its long lasting finishes.

With such high aesthetical demands, GreenCoat PLX Pro BT was successful in helping the Terenzano water mill receive a flat, clean and modern roof that highlights the new construction, without detracting from the original features.

Quality minded façade

Project: Grumbach office complex, façade solution Germany

Target: Eco-conscious façade for office complex

Product: GreenCoat PLX Pro BT

Architect/Supplier: Karl Grumbach, Wetzlar

The German company Grumbach is a well-known manufacturer of rainwater systems. Recently, the company decided to change the entire façade of its office complex. The previous wooden façade was in constant need of repair and repainting, and maintenance costs were adding up. Since Grumbach is known for its quality products and craftsmanship, the company believed it was essential for the new façade to be made from a material that is nearly maintenance free, with high aesthetics and with the durability to last for decades to come.

GreenCoat Grumbach Gullys

The façade on the Grumbach headquarters extends half way down the side of the building with a slight flair before the bottom section begins. The owners wanted to replace the previous wooden façade on the upper section with a long-strip panel construction that created a similar recognizable look. However, they also wanted to be free from the continual maintenance of the old façade. Upon assessing a range of materials and solutions, the decision was made to use the color coated product, GreenCoat PLX Pro BT from SSAB.

The primary motivation for choosing GreenCoat PLX Pro BT was the long-lasting coating that is self-cleaning and provides excellent resistance to corrosion and UV radiation. Furthermore, GreenCoat PLX Pro BT offers a lower impact on the environment than other materials by featuring a Bio-based Technology (BT) with a substantial portion of the traditional fossil component replaced by a bio-based alternative like rapeseed oil.

Installation was performed by a carpenter and not a traditional tinsmith. The carpenter had worked with zinc and copper before, but had experienced these materials as hard to keep flat and easy to damage during installation. With GreenCoat PLX Pro BT, the carpenter was very surprised at the ease of handling, flexibility of the steel and the ability to create nice seam working without any real tinsmith experience.

GreenCoat Grumbach Gullys

Upon completion, the result is a high quality and modern looking façade with clean lines that are free from buckling. The new façade supports Grumbach’s image as a professional company and a trustworthy supplier.

Standing seam GreenCoat Pural steel house in a pine forest Project: roof and facade for a private home

Project: roof and facade for a private home

Task: install a roof and clad the facades with a reliable and visually attractive material

Product: GreenCoat Pural Matt

Contractors: Kalancha Group, Domodedovo

An impressive building in the Dmitrovsky district of the Moscow Region, which belongs to a famous Russian cinematic director and scriptwriter. A modern home “encased” in metal from the very foundations right up to the unusual roof ridge. The project’s design included a metal facing from the outset, but it took a while to decide on the right type. The dominant gray-steel tones of the setting immediately brought to mind the use of titanium zinc for the cladding. However, in the end, polymer-coated steel was chosen. When it came to choosing between a domestically-produced metal and the GreenCoat polymer-coated steel from SSAB, the roofing team, who are experts in working with metal, recommended GreenCoat Pural Matt.

The total area of the seamed metalwork was 750 m2 (2460 sq ft): 350 m2 (1148 sq ft) for the roof, and the remaining 400 m2 (1312 sq ft) for the facade. The profile of the roof is not one continuous straight line; there are 4 sections – each with a different pitch. A garage, also clad in metal, adjoins the main building. There was no need to have additional drainage from the roof of the building, and so the fact that there are no downpipes makes the house’s silhouette brilliantly “clean” and simple. A single lock standing seam was used for the facade – it looks more prominent and stands out more on vertical surfaces. The metal panels on the roof were joined using a double lock standing seam – the industry gold standard. Both the facade and the roof were built using GreenCoat Pural Matt steel of thickness 0.5 mm (0.02 inches). The deep gray steel blends in well with the snowy landscapes of the Moscow Region. GreenCoat Pural Matt steel is easy to work with and has excellent operational performance. In total, it took a month and half to complete the facade and roof cladding at this site, but the roofing team estimate that the time needed could be cut down to one month if needed.

The use of standing seam technology makes the building practically impenetrable to the elements. The home owner is delighted with the result – there have not been any issues with the work.
