Swimming for all – Järvabadet Swimming Pool Pavilion

Swimming is a fun activity for all ages. Unfortunately, not everyone gets to swim or learn how to. Thanks to the city of Stockholm (Sweden), the residents of Järvafältet (a borough consisting of low-income households) now have a place where they can do that.

Commissioned by the city of Stockholm, Järvabadet Swimming Pool Pavilion is located near Stockholm-owned Eggeby Farm. On the farm, there is a nature school, a café, and grounds for various regularly held events and festivals. Järvabadet will strengthen Eggeby Farm as a meeting place.

Designed by AIX Arkitekter Stockholm, in collaboration with LAND landscape architects, the pavilion consists of two practice pools, a swimming pool, a children‘s “splash section”, changing rooms, staff offices, technology buildings and a kiosk. When designing the pavilion, AIX Arkitekter sought to create a structure that could naturally fit within Järvafältet, which is recognized as a natural and cultural reserve. While this project was intended to make a difference for Järvafältet’s residents, the design process also focused on staff transparency, guest safety and equality.

AIX Arkitekter chose to use sustainable GreenCoat Pro BT color coated steel for the roofs using standing seam systems in a distinct Nordic Night Black color, which goes tone in tone with the painted black wooden façade.

GreenCoat® is widely renowned for both high performance and sustainability in architecture. Most GreenCoat® products feature a bio-based coating which uses a substantial portion of Swedish rapeseed oil instead of fossil oil and is unique on the market. This patented solution by SSAB reduces the environmental footprint significantly.

Järvabadet opened during the summer 2020 and is built to make a difference.

6 Questions for Robert Petrén

What is the inspiration for this project?

There were many sources of inspiration, starting with the history, context and scale of the surrounding landscape and buildings. We also looked to principles of Japanese architecture which have strong roots in craft and fine-tuned details. Simple but beautiful in its high quality, light yet robust and with a strong connection between the outside and inside.

What were the challenges you had to overcome while designing Järvabadet?

Järvabadet needs to cater to the needs of all groups, genders, and ages in our society. As a public building, it also has to be very robust and durable. These are often contradictory when creating the kind of sensitive and fine-tuned architecture that we like to create. Finding the right details and methods for building has been a big challenge.

To what extent did sustainability play a role in the design and construction of Järvabadet?

Both environmental and social sustainability played a big role in the project. We worked very closely with the client in developing a swimming pool where everyone can feel equal and safe at all times and, of course, with a minimal environmental impact.

Why did you choose GreenCoat® color coated steel for the roof of Järvabadet?

With the sustainable approach we had, there was no other way to go. GreenCoat® is a product based on green products and offers high performance. Steel is a very durable and long-lasting material for roofs and façades which fits well with the type of high-quality materials we like to use in our buildings.

Most GreenCoat® products use a substantial amount of Swedish rapeseed oil in the paint instead of fossil fuel oils. What do you think about this sustainable innovation for architecture?

We always try to search for new products and methods of production for our projects. The innovation of a paint almost free of fossil fuel oils appeals very much to our environmental ambition. GreenCoat® is an amazing product that ticks all the boxes.

Why did you choose the Nordic Night Black color for the roof?

The color fits the architectural ambition very well. Black is also a color that will always be available for future maintenance. It also fits very well in merging the architecture with the nature around the building. The black color is always present in nature, but you don’t realize it until you see it in place.
