Foundations works are about to be completed for the extensive construction project in Hisingsbron. Hisingsbron will be a bridge in central Gothenburg as a link between Hisingen Island and the land coast. It will develop the central city on both sides of the river. Foundation works started 1,5 years ago in 2017. During the project SSAB has delivered over 28 kilometers of large diameter piles from Oulainen mill to the site. Delivery has included 3 500 tons of RD400/12.5 and 400 tons of RD610/16 piles. Piles are S355J2H and S460MH steel grade.

“We chose SSAB because of the previous experience with RR and RD piles. SSAB is known for high quality steel piles.” says Anders Johansson, Blockchef Grundläggning, Skanska. “We have many years of experience with SSAB and previously Ruukki. We have good contact with the sales team located in Borlänge. They are easy to work with and quick to response.”

Deliveries from SSAB started in March 2017 and have continued until May 2018. Since the project is located in central Gothenburg, there are challenges in logistics. Despite the central location, there have been sufficient conditions for pile storage at the job site. All piles have been delivered to one location at the site and internal project logistics have been taken care of further delivery to the present piling location. Skanska has been satisfied with SSAB’s deliveries; piles have been delivered on time.

The foundation works have been challenging in Hisingsbron project. Piles have been drilled down to 114 meters deep in clay before hitting the bedrock. “This might be the deepest pile drilling with the down to hole hammer at least in the Nordic countries”, says Anders Johansson. “There were no big surprises during the project, but the solid rock was even deeper than expected. This meant also larger amount of steel piles required for the project.”

There are two construction companies Skanska and MT Højgaard working in the project. The client is Trafikkontoret in Gothenburg. Skanska Project Hisingsbron has two contracts in the project; in the B contract the client provides construction designs and the construction company builds accordingly. In the E contract the construction company makes the designs and has also the building responsibility.

The bridge has been given a name ”Arpeggio”, which is Italian and means a type of broken chord, in which the notes that compose a chord are played in a rising or descending order. This describes the drawbridge for ship passage between the two pylons. Hisingsbron project does not only consist of building the Arpeggio-bridge, but also two other small bridges, Stadstjänarbron and Kollektivtrafikbro, ramp on the North side of river and a guide jetty including dredging. Skanska’s foundation works will continue in 1.5 years when the piles will be drilled on the busy shipping lane to form a guide jetty and steer the ships and protect the bridge pillars. This will start at the end of 2019. Hisingsbron will finally be ready for traffic in 2020 and there will be final inspection in 2022.

Hisinsbron bridge will be a landmark in the city and an icon internationally.
