When a new vessel meets the sea for the first time, it is easy to focus on the finished result. What is harder to see are the many decisions that made it possible. Material choices, for example, influence both performance and climate impact. The real journey starts much earlier – in the planning phase, in the workshops, and with the people making decisions long before steel is shaped into a vessel.
In Norway, Salthammer Båtbyggeri is building electric vessels using SSAB Zero™ steel. Tomra Engineering developed the design and adapted it to meet the demanding conditions along the Norwegian coastline. Strong winds, high waves, and salty sea air place high demands on vessels operating in this environment.
For SSAB, the project shows how decisions made early in the process can create value long after construction is complete, and the vessel enters service.

Along the Norwegian coast, a new generation of vessels is taking shape. Norwegian shipping company AQS Rederi has decided to expand its investment in electric shipping with a total of six vessels that Salthammer is building using SSAB Zero™ steel.
For AQS, the investment is about reducing emissions both during construction and operation – from how the vessels are powered to the materials used in their construction.
– The expansion of this order marks another step on our journey toward a fully electric fleet. Together with Salthammer, we have developed vessels that meet our customers’ requirements for efficiency, quality, and sustainability while helping reduce the climate footprint, says Pål Anders Lauvsnes, COO of AQS Rederi.

Every vessel consists of thousands of components and countless material decisions. When companies choose steel with a lower climate impact, they create opportunities to reduce emissions even before the product begins operating.
That makes the transition tangible.
For SSAB, it is not only about producing steel. It is about being part of the solution as more industries work to reduce their emissions. The AQS vessels show how that transformation is already underway.
