SSAB Swedish Steel AB in Brief

SSAB is a leading producer of high-strength steel sheet and steel plate. The Group’s steel operations consist of three divisions - Strip Products Division (main centres are Borlänge and Luleå), Plate Division (Oxelösund) and North American Division (Mobile and Montpelier) and two subsidiaries - Plannja representing processing and Tibnor which is the group’s trading company.
 
In 2007, the Group’s turnover was approx. SEK 48 billion.

The number of employees is 10 000 in operations or offices in over 40 countries and a worldwide sales presence.
 
 


Market Listing

SSAB has been listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange since 1989 and is on the list of the most heavily traded shares. Shareholders include Swedish and international institutions and private investors. The largest single shareholder is Industrivärden. Market value at year-end 2006 was just over SEK 42 billion.


History

SSAB was formed in 1978 through the merger of three steelworks: Domnarvets Järnverk in Borlänge, Oxelösunds Järnverk, and Norrbottens Järnverk in Luleå. Since then, the group has successfully cultivated a niche market for high-strength steel.
 
In july 2007, SSAB acquired the North American steel company IPSCO Inc. and in 2008 SSAB divested the tubular operations within the IPSCO Division.
