Van twijfel naar vraag – hoogwaardig staal blijft overtuigen
Silos Cordoba is a leader in modular design of prefabricated silos, where the use of advanced high strength steel is particularly efficient due to the axially loaded structure. The weight of the silo is significantly reduced, which gives great advantages during transport, assembly and erection of the structural parts.
"A strong steel is good, but weight is also important to many when assessing the strength. 'The sturdier and heavier, the stronger' is a common preconceived notion among many in the market," explains José Cabrera Cuevas, Chief Engineer at Silos Cordoba. "It took us quite some time to convince many of our customers that the opposite was true. A smaller amount of high strength steel is needed to produce a structure of the same or even higher strength."
Apart from convincing hesitant customers about the benefits of the high strength steels, a regulation was also issued which recommended material thicknesses be based on traditional, lower grade steels. The new, thinner but stronger designs did not conform to the provisions of the regulation.
Silos made of high strength steel – the feature which initially created doubt in the market is now in much demand. Everything produced is specially matched to the customer order and the silo size. The thickness of the cover sheets varies depending on their intended locations on the silo. The higher up, the thinner the material.
Silos Cordoba was also able to increase the production capacity within the existing premises, while all store handling is now automated.
The switching to high strength steel provided a cut in transport costs of more than 30 percent and a 20 percent increase in the rate of operational start-up.
An order may comprise 10 large silo buildings, which demands 30-40 trucks for the delivery, and the distances may be long.
The savings of diesel oil by changing to high strength steels are significant, which obviously reduces emissions.
Project in het kort
The benefits of switching to high strength steel are enjoyed by the Spanish company Silos Cordoba – as well as by the customers.
Silos Cordoba is a leading silos manufacturer in the European market, whose product is delivered to customers all around the world. The company was awarded with the second prize in the Swedish Steel Prize 2008 for its innovative use of high strength steel
