“I have fifteen years experience in operating data centers,” says Jon Karlung, standing by his module prototypes – containers for data storage – on the table in front of him. “All this knowledge, everything we've done right and everything we did wrong, I have used when we developed these modules together with SSAB.”

Around the turn of the new millennium many companies invested in huge spaces, which they then failed to fill. Other companies need to expand their centers but found it difficult to do so. However with his new company Modular Data Center (MDC), Karlung wants to make the data center industry more flexible by developing an adjustable data center.

Created in close cooperation with SSAB, MDC has developed a module solution that provides unparalleled scalability. Each module can be complemented with new modular components, with more rack cabinets, more cooling and more power, precisely when needed. The data center can be expanded or scaled back according to the current requirements.

“The modular approach allows clients to avoid long planning periods,” adds Karlung. “A complete unit, ready for operation, can be delivered in just twelve weeks. In comparison, it takes a couple of years to get a conventional data center up and running.”
