THE CHALLENGE
Demands from the mormon church: strength and top quality
When the cold air from the Andes mixes with the warm air from the ocean, the hailstones over Argentina can be as large as tennis balls and cause major destruction. All that's left of a clay tile roof after the storm hits is crumbs.
The American Mormon Church is becoming established in Argentina and wants to build 17 churches. Considering the size of the hail, demands for roofing material were high – strength, superior quality, and durability, all at a reasonable price.
THE SOLUTION
The fall of the wall
Mera System is located in southern Sweden. In 1989 the company was one of the first to manufacture steel sheet roof tiles and early on it began to export its products. But how can a Swedish company export metal roofing which is already manufactured in the export markets? Torbjörn Eliasson, sales coordinator at Mera System in Anderslöv, explains:
“First of all, we have a unique product. We have a line of roof tiles for which we can vary the step length from 275 mm up to 600 mm and profile height from 10 mm and up to 25 mm. Second of all, our quality; we're certified to ISO 9002. We can deliver within extremely narrow tolerances.”
But how do global politics fit into the picture?
“One of our distributors lived through the turbulence and rapid changes in Berlin during the years after the wall fell,” says Torbjörn Eliasson. “He traveled to Argentina and really liked the country, so he started a business there and our products went along for the ride. Early on he came into contact with the Mormon Church in Argentina and was able to make a trial delivery of Prelaq Nova.”
CUSTOMER BENEFITS
The choice of Prelaq Nova was very international
In South America prepainted steel sheet is often used in exclusive buildings. But the choice of Prelaq Nova was very intentional. Plastisol was not an option because of the heat and UV radiation. Local products are available in trapezoidal-profiled polyester. But the Church wanted high quality and a product that has optimum color durability in an environment with high temperatures and strong ultraviolet rays.
And Prelaq Nova has yet another advantage – when the customers feel the surface they know they really are getting Prelaq Nova and not another coating of inferior quality. This difference is important in many markets.
