From crude steel to finished product

SSAB has production plants in Sweden and the US. The steel mills in Luleå and Oxelösund produce crude steel. In Oxelösund, the steel slabs are processed into heavy plate, while in Borlänge strip products are produced from steel slabs produced in Luleå. Processing and finishing of the various steel products takes place also in China. SSAB conducts extensive research at several of its plants in order to be on the cutting edge in the development of new grades of steel.

SSAB has two different steel production methods. In Sweden, production takes place in a blast furnace process, whereas in the US the production is scrap-based and takes place in electric arc furnaces.

High strengths steel are SSAB's niche

Niche products – the high strength steels – account for approximately 37% of SSAB's shipments. The objective is to increase the share of high strength steels to 50% in 2015. The other volumes comprise ordinary steels. SSAB has a crude steel production capacity of 6 million tonnes. Global crude steel capacity in 2011 is estimated at approximately 1.5 billion tonnes.

Environmental strategy supports the business

SSAB is continuously working to improve efficiency enhancements that reduce the impact on the environment from steel production. The efficient use of resources represents an important cornerstone of the strategy. Target-oriented work in regards to the use of natural resources, energy and byproducts contributes directly to increased profitability in operations. Increased energy efficiency reduces energy costs and innovative use of byproducts from production processes can further contribute to a more efficient use of resources.

SSAB has a well-developed process in place for minimizing carbon dioxide emissions and is working to achieve further improvements in both the short term and long term. The target is to achieve, by 2012, a reduction of at least 2% in carbon dioxide emissions per tonne of produced steel at the blast furnace-based plants, compared with 2008. For SSAB, this represents a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 130,000 tonnes per year.
