At SSAB, we aim to increase diversity within our workforce and workplace – which includes gender diversity, along with all aspects that make team members diverse.

It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in the fight for gender equality, but it also highlights the work that still needs to be done. By celebrating the achievements of women and advocating for their rights, we can continue to move towards a more equitable and inclusive society for all.

Being a woman in the steel industry

Cahalan Gibson, Caster/VTD Manager at SSAB in Alabama, U.S, has been with SSAB for five years, first as the primary end refractory manager and now caster/VTD (vacuum tank degasser) manager. She thinks being a woman in the steel industry is not just about breaking barriers; it's about reshaping narratives and fostering inclusion and diversity.

“Women bring unique perspectives, skills, and talents to traditionally male-dominated fields, enriching them with fresh ideas and innovative approaches. Their presence challenges stereotypes, inspires future generations to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, and promotes equal opportunities for all. By actively participating and excelling in these industries, women pave the way for greater gender equality and create more inclusive environments where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender,” says Cahalan Gibson.
