An interesting tour at strip mill

The Swedish Steel Prize event always opens with a full day tour at the SSAB rolling mill in Borlänge. This arrangement was originally created to give a broad perspective of the development and manufacture of the top quality steel grades produced by SSAB.  The most spectacular show was in the Knowledge Service Center, where they gave a living picture of how advanced high strength steel can make a difference in the everyday life of most people.

The opening number was a new trailer used for the transport of timber from the Swedish forests to paper mills and sawmills. After having studied the trailer from the ground it was time to enter the exhibition on top of the body including deep drawn, welded, cut, small and big they stand as statues on pedestals.

“This guy did experience the benefits”
Robert Ström, at SSAB Knowledge Service Center, turned a car that only seconds ago was involved in an accident towards the audience.
– Now everybody can see that the right side of the crash test dummy head has no obvious injuries, he said and turned the car. The door on the left side had severe damage and the doll was bleeding. At least the head was red. Both doors came from cars that had actually been in accidents, though it is only a simulation this time.

– It is not a huge difference measured in millimetres, but it is a difference that matters. It could be the thin line between life and death. The advanced high strength steel makes a huge difference, said Robert Ström and received great applause for the presentation.
