SSAB Americas is a leading supplier of heavy plate in North and Latin America. Production takes place at two steelworks, Mobile, Alabama and Montpelier, Iowa. Processing and storage facilities are also available in Houston and St. Paul, as well as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. SSAB Americas produces ordinary heavy plate and quenched steel.
Scrap-based steel production
The steelworks in Mobile and Montpelier produce steel slabs completely from scrap metal. Production takes place in electric arc furnaces. The steelworks have a crude steel capacity of 1.3 and 1.2 million tonnes respectively. The slabs are processed into heavy plates. The brand Hardox has been produced in the USA since 2011. Stamping facilities are in Houston, St Paul and Toronto. In order to increase proximity to the South American market there are storage facilities in Curitiba (Brazil) and Santiago (Chile).
