SSAB’s safety mission is to ensure a safe and healthful working environment for all employees and contractors through comprehensive training, site specific business plans and continuous improvements.

Safety

Dedication to Continuous Improvement
Each SSAB North America operating facility has developed a site specific comprehensive Business Safety Plan. The plans include measurable performance objectives and action steps to address areas of concern including:
• Safety training and communications
• Roles and responsibilities
• Incident investigation and follow-up
• Safety committees and employee involvement
• Recognition
• Elimination of unsafe behaviors
• Elimination of physical hazards
• Contractor safety performance
• Multiple incident/injury employees
• Innovation
The plans were developed and edited with broad input from many internal sources. They are reviewed and updated on an annual basis as part of SSAB North America's continuous improvement objectives.
In conjunction with internal audits and housekeeping tours, a well-recognized international safety service firm assists in the process by conducting annual external audits and providing frequent feedback on progress.

Safety Committees
Throughout the SSAB North American facilities, employees at all levels participate in active safety committees dedicated to the achievement of injury prevention objectives. Safety committees ensure a proactive approach to safety through the development of safe procedures, continuous auditing and implementation of prompt corrective actions when appropriate.

Recognition and Results
SSAB employees are encouraged to provide input and solutions to improve safety performance in the workplace. When ideas and improvements are executed, employees are recognized through our innovations and reward programs. Steadily improving safety performance, concurrent with exceptional operating results, reinforces SSAB’s belief that it is not necessary to choose between a safe workplace and a productive workplace. On the contrary, it demonstrates that the same management tools and worker skills that foster a successful business climate simultaneously provide a safe place to work.

Industry Associations
SSAB North America is an active participant in many industry organizations and works closely with key partners to develop best practices and share leading edge ideas to improve safety systems.
