Recyclability of Steel
Steel is North America's number one recycled material. Each year, more steel is recycled than aluminum, paper, glass and plastic combined. Three-quarters of all North American steel ends up recycled into new products, which is part of the industry’s comprehensive environmental commitment. Over the past decade, the North American steel industry has reduced the energy required to produce one ton of steel by 28 percent. This improvement is largely the result of increased scrap utilization.
SSAB's operations in Iowa and Alabama produce high quality steel plate and coil products utilizing electric arc furnaces to melt steel scrap. These facilities run very efficient operations and have made a significant contribution to the industry-wide energy efficiency improvements noted above. .
