SSAB's history

In 2008, SSAB celebrated 30 years as a company, but its history goes back much further than that. SSAB was formed in 1978 through the merger of Domnarvets Jernverk in Borlänge, Norrbottens Järnverk in Luleå and Oxelösunds Järnverk in Oxelösund.

The Swedish steel industry has proud traditions to uphold  export of steel.

SSAB is firmly rooted in local communities and its history is interwoven with the development of the communities around the mills. Since its inception, SSAB has successfully developed into one of the most profitable steel producers in the world today, with a well-defined strategy focused on selected niche segments within high-strength and quenched steels.

These steelworks have an annual total capacity of about 2.5 million metric tons of crude steel. In SSAB North America, these facilities use steel scrap as its primary raw material.
